So Slavery Is Off Limits Now! Leslie Jones Sparks Outrage; New SNL Cast Member Takes Jokes Too Far?
So when cast members complained about dressing in drag to play black women due to the fact that SNL’s cast lacked diversity, the show answered the call by hiring two new black female writers. We’ve already met Sasheer Zamata, but Saturday night Leslie Jones stepped from behind the scenes onto the camera. Who knew a black woman could spark so much outrage joking about slavery?
I’m just saying that back in the slave days, my love life would have been way better…Massah would have hooked me up with the best brotha on the plantation. … I would be the No. 1 slave draft pick. All of the plantations would want me.
During a segment on The Weekend Update, Leslie Jones jokes that it’s hard for her to find a man today because she’s six feet tall and a strong looking black woman. However in the days of slavery, she would have been high in demand because she’s built like a Mandingo, which is great for breeding. She goes on to joke that she would have popped out well bred kids like Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James for the master.
Now I’m not outraged, and I actually find humor in the skit. I am however a little put-off by the way Leslie Jones characterizes her beauty. It’s kind of hard to laugh at someone’s insecurities. I think the jokes are a little too honest for the SNL viewers, and that’s why many people are so upset because it’s not like it’s the first time that SNL has taken on slavery in a comedy sketch. Check out the video below and let me know what you think…
Ebony.com senior editor Jamilah Lemieux, sent out a tweet claiming she was “so appalled” and called Leslie Jones “an embarrassment.” Due to the backlash from Ebony.com and many other black critics, Leslie Jones was forced to defend herself on twitter:
Ok I wasn’t gonna say any thing because I know that dumb people know how to use the computer too, but now this is so ridiculous. If anybody should be offended is white folks cause it’s what they did.
Y’all so busy trying to be self righteous you miss what the joke really is. I’m betting if Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle did that joke or Jay Z or Kanye put in a rap they would be called brilliant cause they all do this type of material. Just cause it came from a strong black woman who ain’t afraid to be real y’all mad.
So here is my announcement black folks, you won’t stop me and I’m gonna go even harder and deeper now. Cause it’s a shame that we kill each other instead of support each other. This exactly why black people are where we are now, cause we too f–king sensitive and instead of (making) lemonade out of lemons we just suck the sour juice from the lemons. Wake up.
I wouldn’t be able to do a joke like that if I didn’t know my history or proud of where I came from and who I am.
Ebony.com owes Leslie Jones an apology. To call Leslie and embarrassment and to criticize her humor to that degree is elitist. I can’t believe the nerve of Ebony.com. They will promote and push shows like Love & Hip Hop ATL, but label a black woman who has made it to a major network television show because of her writing skills as an embarrassment. IJS, the jokes were controversial, but certainly not worthy of downgrading Leslie or her talents as an embarrassment.
