Aretha Franklin: “Pre-Recording Never Crossed My Mind”

Aretha Franklin is defending Beyonce against allegations that Beyonce lip-synched the National Anthem during President Obama’s inauguration. Well, I should say, Aretha Franklin kind of defends Beyonce against said allegations before adding:

I wanted to give people the real thing and pre-recording never crossed my mind.

Never even crossed her mind, interesting! Aretha Franklin also admits that it is quite cold during the inauguration which is not good for a singer’s voice. Side Note: Although Kelly Clarkson and Aretha Franklin managed to sing live under such conditions, actually it was colder when Aretha Franklin sang My Country Tis of Thee, but I digress. Perhaps next time, Ms Franklin will prerecord her vocals under such extreme conditions she reveals:

But, when I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather,” Franklin told ABC News in an interview. In fact, the weather was even colder than that Monday, around 40 degrees. When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record … next time I’ll probably do the same. {Aretha Franklin Defends Beyonce’s Lip-Syncing}

People are asking why does it matter if Beyonce lip-synched? IDK, (1) maybe because it’s such an honor that many singers would have jumped at the opportunity to sing our National Anthem live during such an historic moment. (2) There is something authentic about singing live under pressure, as Aretha Franklin puts it, “the real thing.” (3) Lip-synching doesn’t reflect well on this President, who now has to deal with more teleprompter jokes, again. (4) Because it’s not the Superbowl, a sport, it’s an actual government function for the highest office and should be honored in the moment with OUR song. (5) Just because someone else has done in the past like Whitney Houston, does not justify why others should do it or keep doing it, besides it wasn’t close to Whitney’s. (6) No one is doubting Beyonce’s ability to sing, just to rise to an occasion like a champion and sing it under pressure, when emotions are high like those singers before her. It’s not about can Beyonce sing, it’s why didn’t she sing live, or why hasn’t she confirmed allegations? If she did lip-sync, own it, especially if it’s not a BIG deal…If she did NOT lip-sync, own it, too!!! Claim your greatness just like Aretha Franklin claimed that hat!
