Vivica A. Fox debuted a new look at the Men in Black 3 movie premiere in New York City. The actress who once played Will Smith’s love interest on the big screen and who now has her own wig line rocked a short ruffled pixie cut wearing all white which gave off a more youthful appearance.

R&B super star, Usher Raymond kicked off this year’s Toyota Concert Series this morning on The Today Show.

In his first-ever “Today” concert, the seven-time Grammy award winner rocked out in Rockefeller Plaza performing “OMG,” “Without U” and his new hits “Climax”(my favorite) and “Scream.”

This year’s line-up includes his protege Justin Bieber(June 15th) and Chris Brown (June 8th), two superstars who set record-breaking crowds in previous “Today” concerts. The 2012 series will also feature Pitbull (May 25th) and Flo Rida (July 6th).

This year, “Today” is partnering with Pandora to extend the concert series beyond the Plaza and into the digital space.

As we predicted, Jermaine Paul wins NBC’s The Voice last night. The former Alicia Keys background singer, proved that he deserves to be in the spotlight and America agreed. He was our favorite from day one!

It’s also amazing how Blake Shelton, one of country music’s biggest stars and who isn’t usually up for much of the strong R&B talent, was able to mentor and coach, Jermaine Paul to the top, but he did an amazing job throughout the entire competition.

The two-night season finale was packed with the most powerful, soulful and heavy-hitting performances that I’ve seen from a reality TV show competition in recent memory. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Jermaine Paul. Not only does he have a voice that R&B needs today, but he is already developed and experienced from touring with Alicia Keys and now doing live TV. He’s got a great look and can probably experiment with acting and modeling, but for now I am sure he is ready to hit the studio and work on an album through the recording contract he has won through the show.

I just wanted to share a few things that I learned from blogging because as a blogger we are sometimes misunderstood. I hope this helps other bloggers, so they know they’re not alone. With so much competition it’s hard finding your voice and keeping it over time. So here’s my list of things learned:

1. Everyone will post the same stories. Even if you are the first to post, someone will follow suit. Even if you have a true exclusive, someone else will claim it, too. People don’t go to their favorite blog to get the news. They go because they want to get the blogger’s spin on the news. If you like details you’re going to visit The YBF or Necole Bitchie. If you like a fresh perspective you will visit C&D or Sandra Rose. If you need a laugh or you want the honest truth through humor you have Miss Jia and Kid Fury. If you like forums and secrecy, Lipstick Alley or Baller Alert. If you want pure coonery and nonsensical tabloid drama, well you know,  MTO fills that void.
2. Just because you link, doesn’t mean everyone else will link back, too. Enough said!!! It is what it is…
   
3. People will talk about you just like in real life. If you have an opinion about something or someone, just expect that people will have an opinion about you. Bloggers are not exempt from criticism. People will talk about your looks, your grammar, your bank account, and in some cases your personal life and criminal record. Oooh! Don’t talk about a celebrity with a stan-base. Those crazy people will come after you. Rihanna Navy, Team Breezy, Barbz, Honey Bees, Monsters, and whatever else they call themselves, they will come to slay. BEWARE!
4. Subliminal shade is real, and so is blogger beef, but don’t fall into the trap. Unless someone @ you, don’t get involved with the shade or lack there of. If another blogger can’t contact you personally, then most of the time it’s not worth addressing on twitter. My e-mail address is listed as is most bloggers. If you have a problem, contact the other blogger, first, before assuming the worst in them. I have misread posts, where I thought someone was taking a dig at me, but ultimately e-mailed them directly, and usually I read too much into the post or the tweet. With that said, someone is going to think this is subliminal shade, but really it’s not. I do e-mail people I have a problem with.
5. You can’t please everyone!!! No matter how fair or objective you try to be, someone will read it wrong and be upset with you. There is no such thing as objectivity when it comes to Basketball Wives, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz, Fantasia or R Kelly. There will always be a fight. Apparently peeing on kids shouldn’t affect albums sales.
6. Don’t count other blogger’s coins. The metric for making money is not straight forward. So many factors go into a blogger’s pocket book, including pageviews, comments, niche market, appearances, twitter followers, and partnerships. Just because they don’t have a high Alexa Ranking doesn’t mean they are not making money, and vice versa. Just because they make six figures, doesn’t mean you will too. However, there are plenty of ways to add to your revenue as a blogger. Google it!
7. Give credit to where credit is do. There is NOTHING wrong with being supportive. I am PROUD of so many of my fellow bloggers. Also find a person you can trust. I have one blogger that I turn to when I get upset, or if I have a question. I have another blogger I turn to for business advice or rumor control. Not everyone will be your buddy, but find someone who will help you. PLEASE HELP others, don’t be stingy with your advice.
8. People DON’T always leave comments when you want them to. Even if they read a story on your blogs first, they will still save their comments for another blog. Don’t stop writing and don’t stop asking questions. Eventually they will come…or not. I have people tell me how much they love my blog, and yet they have never left a comment. Some bloggers are just better at sparking conversations than others. They just are…
9. It takes time to build a brand. Don’t give up! Three years ago I wanted to sell my blog for a few pennies. Once blogging becomes a business, it’s not always easy. I am glad I didn’t sell my blog then because now it’s worth ten times the amount I would have sold it for. I think about quitting, but I do this now because of my readers. You grow so fund of your readers over time, and you appreciate their loyalty. Remember, many of the top blogs have been around for nearly five years or more, and some have blogged before and failed before trying again.
10. Anyone who has something negative to say about bloggers, obviously never blogged. Yes, we are opinionated, but we also provide an outlet for black news. We promote movies, books, songs, videos, fashion, shoes, purses, lip gloss, TV shows that other news outlet aren’t even trying to deal with, and some blogs do it for free. There is always a negative and a positive side in entertainment. But when mainstream media is ignoring  certain products or talent, there is a blogger out there ready to vouch for or promote whatever someone is selling. Ask Tyler Perry, he knows the value of blogs.

There is so much more that I’ve learned, but these are my top ten. Oh, and even if you’re an English major you will make plenty of grammar mistakes. Just keep writing and ignore the grammar Nazis. Bloggers are journaling and not journalists. Our thoughts are on display as we think, and yes there will be mistakes. Not an excuse, just the reality of the situation. Typos and grammatical errors. In a world with auto-correct and red squiggly lines, WHY are you still incorrectly spelling congratulations with a “D”??

Other than present company (MrsGrapevin,com), I love reading MissJia.com, BlacknBougie.com, LiveForFilms.com and TheOnion.com.

10.  One word best describes me

Makoosa. That means “I dance” (which I do: I’ve studied ballet, tap, jazz, African, modern etc since I was 13) in a Cameroonian language called Duala, which is the origin of MJ’s line of “ma ma se ma ma sa ma ma coo sa” in Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (my number one, all-time favorite MJ song). See how that’s all connected?? *Forrest Gump voice* Me and Mike was like peas and carrots.

I love to write and I love to make people laugh.  We have a lot of things weighing down on us in the world. I try and do my part to remind everyone that all we need is love and that humor is all around us. Da Brat is back with a fresh new mixtape entitled, Life After Death, not only an homage to the late Notorius B.I.G, but also a reflection of her life before and after prison.  MrsGrapevine.com had an opportunity to talk with Da Brat one on one. We discussed everything from Da Brat’s return to music, Nicki Minaj, and the lack of women in hip-hop today. We also asked her a few questions submitted by our readers via Facebook, dealing with her sexuality, her “tomboy” style of dressing, and her relationship to Lisa Raye. She also reveals a little something about Mariah Carey and dem babies.

You missed one of the biggest events in US history, what was it like behind bars when you found out Barack Obama won the presidency?

Awww man, we were all in jail crying. The whole thing was in Chicago, I’m from Chicago, I will rep Chicago till I die, so you know I just wanted to be there; just mad because I couldn’t be there.  But, it was a beautiful day.

It was very emotional for black people in general.  No matter what, though, you’re going to have your haters, but ummm such a monumental thing to happen, especially since what 50 years ago, we couldn’t even sit on the front of the bus. It’s monumental, and I think it’s a beautiful thing! No matter what happens, I support him because it’s just great to see a black man as President. You never thought you would see that. I never thought the world would even let it happen.

What about Michelle Obama?

I think him and Michelle or doing a good job. I mean when he came into the game, it wasn’t all peaches and cream. He has to fix everybody mistakes, and the things they’d messed up before he got here.

I think Michelle Obama does a great job. I love her style her personality, her charisma. You know everything she does for the world. And plus I like her little style, she ain’t trying to go spend $10,000 on an outfit. She will go to H&M on your ass, or T J Maxx,  spoof up the same outfit. I think that’s real classy and down to earth, it’s like the girl next door.

I love them as a couple, and I like what they’re doing.

Speaking of growing up in Chicago, there are a lot of rumors out there about your relationship to Lisa Raye. We know you’re sisters, but can you explain how you’re related? One site says you’re half sisters, another site says step sisters…

Yeah we got the same father.

MGV: Did you actually grow up in the same household with Lisa Raye?

No, not the same household

So Let’s talk about the mixtape, Life After Death, and the title. Is it a homage to the Notrious B.I.G., or is it just symbolic of the last few years?

Both really. I don’t know if people know this, but I was really close to Biggie. In fact right before he passed in Vegas, yeah, it was during the Soul Train Music Awards, I smoked out with him and Lil Caesar…

I never really got a chance to say goodbye, so this mixtape is like a Rest In Peace. He was one of the first rappers to put me on, I did a track for him, and he turned around and did a track for me. I use to call him my Big Black Teddy. Yeah, I loved  Biggie.

Yeah, when I went to jail, my life as I knew it died. So it’s definitely a reference to that. So much had change. I didn’t want to write while in jail because it just didn’t feel right, and I couldn’t record.  I had this little cheap effin’ recorder, and it just didn’t sound right, it didn’t have the same feeling as being in the studio. When I was released to the half way house, JD [Jermaine Dupri] hooked me up with this headphones and digital mixer set, and that was cool, but nothing is like being in the studio.

How was it hitting the studio for the first time in over three years, were you overwhelmed with material, did you have a hard time finding your voice?

It wasn’t hard, I didn’t lose my voice, never that. But no, when I hit the studio, I had a lot to say and record.

Do you think going to prison added depth to your music in the tradition of other hip-hop artists like Tupac?

It  definitely added depth to my life I mean, I thank God for every experience that I’ve had. I feel like everything happened for a reason. And so yeah, the whole prison thing is a part of my journey, and a part of my struggle, and in everything I do. Even today when I talk about it, I have a true testimony. It’s not like I didn’t have one before, but you know now, I can talk about that. I can talk to other people about  not  going down the same path. It’s all a part of my testimony and a part of my journey so definitely. Everything I go through adds depth to my life.

While in prison did you learn more about yourself, or more about the people who surrounded you before?

I think I learned more about myself.  Don’t laugh when I tell you this, but I didn’t know what ovulating was. So you know, I learned more about how often my period comes, like when you feel this certain pain, it’s kind of like cramps. It doesn’t mean your cycle is coming, it just mean you’re ovulating. I know it’s funny, but I learned a lot about myself that when I was home, I never really had the time to pay attention to.

I also learned a lot about the people who love and support me. I learned a lot about my fans. When you’re out and you moving around so much, you got a fan club, when you’re a celebrity or whatever.  When fans write you, you don’t really get all of your mail directly. You might see some of it or glance a few pieces here and there, you might sign some autograph pictures to make sure your fans are cook like that,  but getting the mail directly 20-30 pieces of mail a day, it’s just amazing.  From Africa, Japan, New Zealand, ummm Turkey, that shit be like wow.

The people who came to see me and show me love, it was amazing… And yeah, I learned a quite bit about some of the people who I thought would show me love, and didn’t come through.

What happened to women in hip-hip while you were away in prison? No offense but right now, we have Nicki Minaj and Nicki Minaj? How did women get squeezed out of the game?

I can’t say what happened to women, when I was locked away, because I was locked up, but before I went in, the industry was going through a change from CDs to the internet. It was hard getting a record deal.  They weren’t promoting certain artists. I don’t know about others, but I was making music from Miami, to Atlanta, to Chicago. They weren’t trying to put us out. I was recording a bunch of stuff, but it was like a waste of time, not knowing if your work would get released or if they would give you the promotional budget you need. There were women in the game before I went in like Shana, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Remy Ma. I don’t know what happened to them.

Side Note: Now that I think about it three of those four women went to jail, to0. They were just locking up women in hip-hop from left to right.

Like on the BET Awards, once again no offense to Nicki Minaj, but they had a hard time filling the category for Best Rap Female.

Honestly, BET should have just given Nicki the award instead of trying to find someone who ain’t doing nothing or who no one has heard of.

Like I said I was out there trying, but it was hard. Not just hard for us, but look at 50 Cent, and Kanye West, they had the same problems. They had to create a buzz by creating a battle to see who could sell the most.  You have to have a gimmick. I don’t know where all of the women emcees are, but it’s depressing. It really is!

When we asked our readers what is the one thing they would like to know about you, 90% of the questions revolved around your sexuality and music. One reader wanted to know if you had a choice between Meaghan Good and Idris Elba, who would you rather?

{Laughs hard} That’s funny! I’m going to leave that one to the imagination. How about that?

MGV: Why do you think people are so fascinated with your sexuality?

I love that, I LOVE that! I hope they stay fascinated with my sexuality because that’s something that makes them wonder.  Some people feel like they know; some people feel like they wonder; and some people feel like they don’t know. So I probably will NEVER answer that question to make people keep on wondering.

MGV: It’s the best way to market yourself, too. You don’t have to be put in a box:

Definitely, it’s the best of both worlds.

One reader wanted to know, why do you dress like a guy, and what happened to the Da Brat from the What’cha Like video?

Well you can tell that reader, when I dress tomboyish, I don’t really consider it dressing like a guy. I am a full fledge woman and I like to dress however I feel comfortable. So when I feel like getting glam-med up, and throwing on the Christian Louboutins, and the weave, or whatever I’m going to do to my hair, and push up my titties in a push-up bra, throw on my La Perla, then that’s what it is and I’m comfortable either way. But when I’m performing or just, on the day to day, or in the streets, I’ll probably have my braids with my hat cocked to the back.

My braids  is more low maintenance than me having to get up every day and curl the hair and put on a full fake fledge face of make up, you know what I’m saying.

I’m cute without makeup, so I really don’t have to worry about that. I’m blessed to have good skin and good genes. You know! So they gone get that when I give it to them. I like to make people guess, and to make people wonder.  When they do see me like that, it’s like, “Damn that’s Brat!” Because when you use to seeing me, you use to seeing a P-Y-T, Pretty Young Thug, so when I throw on that sh-WAM,  when I turn into Shante on them, it’s like OMGosh.  I’m not going to give you that Wat’cha Like all of the time. I’m give it to you in spurts, so you will be surprised, and I can keep you guessing.

You’re close to Mariah Carey. What is something you can tell us about Mariah Carey that most people don’t know?

There are so many things. Let’s see…When she takes off her shoes she walks on her tippy-toes when she’s barefoot, because she can’t walk flat-foot; she so use to wearing heels. And when she was a kid she walked on her tippy toes. Her heels do not hit the ground.

Have you seen the twins? Do they look more like Mariah or Nick?

Yeah! Ummmmmm, you can’t really really tell, but I think more like Mariah when she was a baby.  You know, but they’re probably going to grow up into looking like the both of them. When they are babies you can’t really see it, until they start growing into themselves.

When is your album coming out? When can we expect to see an album from Da Brat?

We don’t have a date or anything yet, but JD and I are in the studio quite often, and I got a track from Pharrell so far.  You know! I don’t want to spill the secrets, but you know it’s coming. I don’t have a date, but as soon as I get it. I have somebody reach out to you, so you can let my friends and my fans know what’s going on with your girl.

MGV: Has Jermaine Durpi instrumental in getting you back into the music industry?

Oh! Absolutely! Absolutely.

VH1 is broadening its own sports franchise, announcing that the channel will premiere spinoff series Basketball Wives LA on Monday, August at 8p. MrsGrapevine.com caught up with Fonzworth Bentely to discuss his latest music adventure. During the process I learned a lot of new things about the mufti-talented artist. One of the most unique things about Derek Watkins, “Mr. Bentley”, is that he speaks in metaphors; nothing is simple and everything can be broken down into an analogy. He’s very quick witted, and WILL turn the interview on you if you miss a step. We talked about everything from marriage, to having a cancerous tumor the size of a volleyball,  his faith in Christ, his first job, and his love of music.

Fonzworth Bentely, named after the character Bootney Farnsworth from the old school movie, Let’s Do It Again, starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby, just dropped his mixtape C.O.U.L.O.R.S (Cool Outrageous Lovers Of Uniquely Raw Style).  When asked if he finds it hard transitioning as a solo music artist, he replies, “Not really!”

What people may not know is that Mr. Bentley started off in music, playing the violin since the age of two via the Suzuki method, and singing in a local boy’s choir in Atlanta. Not to mention working as Diddy’s assistant and hanging around the likes of Kanye West and Andre 3000 has only helped him to understand the music industry inside out. Fonzworth Bentley has spent the last seven years writing and working on his sound. Many hip-hop blogs were surprisingly impressed by the quality of his skills, “They were probably looking for something they could talk about or laugh  about,” he says, but instead they were charmed.

Last year rumors hit the internet that Fonzworth Bentley was engaged and getting married to actress, Fuane Chambers (Watkins), most known for her role as Dorothy Baker in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Faune is pictured below with her husband at ATL Live On the Park). It’s been almost a year since the couple has been married, and Bentley describes his wife as his “rib”; a biblical reference to Adam and Eve’s union, and  just like a rib comforts and protects the vital organs so that they want be exposed, his wife does the same for him. He describes his first year of marriage as fantastic, and feels a sense of completion.

The most surprising thing about Fonzworth Bentley is his relationship with Christ. On the autobiographical song  Believe It, featuring Faith Evans, Bentley talks about being diagnosed with a malignant tumor the size of a volley ball, and how God delivered and healed him from the cancer. He has a scar on his stomach, but sees it as a beautiful sign of God’s amazing power. I asked him why aren’t so many people in the business openly sharing their religion, and he had this to say, “Religion is divisive, but spirituality resonates with most people. I don’t know how people can be apart of this business without spirituality or a belief in the Creator.” He also describes his music as Kingdom Music, and talks about his ability to counsel people through his words. He’s the type of person that people unload their troubles onto, and he always seems to have the right words to help them through their struggles, which is evident in his music. Everything he talks about in the song, Believe It, is real. He even accused me of not listening to the song, because I wasn’t sure if the song was just telling a story that sounds good, or if it was genuinely revealing his life experiences. He let it be known that it’s the latter.

Speaking of music, Bentley seems to think music is in a good place right now, and has an interesting take on today’s music:

Hip-hop is in it’s punk stage, like rock had it’s funk stage. New and exciting ideas. Music is in very exciting place. Music is in the artist hand, they are no longer pigeoned toed. People are searching for new vibes, new sounds, and new cool. People are selling out shows without being on the radio. I’m not making songs for the radio. It would be nice to make it to the radio, but you can be successful without it. Word of mouth works, and oh, my website.

Lasly, I asked Fonzworth Bentley about his first job. It seems he was a life guard at Thomsaville Pool in Atlanta. He also ran the pool behind Greenbriar, and made really good money doing so. He’s not surprised that saving lives was his first job, it seems to be a prophetic theme in his life, or should I say a metaphor for his personality; life coaching and life saving.
