Makoosa. That means “I dance” (which I do: I’ve studied ballet, tap, jazz, African, modern etc since I was 13) in a Cameroonian language called Duala, which is the origin of MJ’s line of “ma ma se ma ma sa ma ma coo sa” in Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (my number one, all-time favorite MJ song). You missed one of the biggest events in US history, what was it like behind bars when you found out Barack Obama won the presidency?

Awww man, we were all in jail crying. The whole thing was in Chicago, I’m from Chicago, I will rep Chicago till I die, so you know I just wanted to be there; just mad because I couldn’t be there.  But, it was a beautiful day.

It was very emotional for black people in general.  No matter what, though, you’re going to have your haters, but ummm such a monumental thing to happen, especially since what 50 years ago, we couldn’t even sit on the front of the bus. It’s monumental, and I think it’s a beautiful thing! No matter what happens, I support him because it’s just great to see a black man as President. You never thought you would see that. I never thought the world would even let it happen.

What about Michelle Obama?

I think him and Michelle or doing a good job. I mean when he came into the game, it wasn’t all peaches and cream. He has to fix everybody mistakes, and the things they’d messed up before he got here.

I think Michelle Obama does a great job. I love her style her personality, her charisma. You know everything she does for the world. And plus I like her little style, she ain’t trying to go spend $10,000 on an outfit. She will go to H&M on your ass, or T J Maxx,  spoof up the same outfit. I think that’s real classy and down to earth, it’s like the girl next door.

I love them as a couple, and I like what they’re doing.

Speaking of growing up in Chicago, there are a lot of rumors out there about your relationship to Lisa Raye. We know you’re sisters, but can you explain how you’re related? One site says you’re half sisters, another site says step sisters…

Yeah we got the same father.

MGV: Did you actually grow up in the same household with Lisa Raye?

No, not the same household

So Let’s talk about the mixtape, Life After Death, and the title. Is it a homage to the Notrious B.I.G., or is it just symbolic of the last few years?

Both really. I don’t know if people know this, but I was really close to Biggie. In fact right before he passed in Vegas, yeah, it was during the Soul Train Music Awards, I smoked out with him and Lil Caesar…

I never really got a chance to say goodbye, so this mixtape is like a Rest In Peace. He was one of the first rappers to put me on, I did a track for him, and he turned around and did a track for me. I use to call him my Big Black Teddy. Yeah, I loved  Biggie.

Yeah, when I went to jail, my life as I knew it died. So it’s definitely a reference to that. So much had change. I didn’t want to write while in jail because it just didn’t feel right, and I couldn’t record.  I had this little cheap effin’ recorder, and it just didn’t sound right, it didn’t have the same feeling as being in the studio. When I was released to the half way house, JD [Jermaine Dupri] hooked me up with this headphones and digital mixer set, and that was cool, but nothing is like being in the studio.

How was it hitting the studio for the first time in over three years, were you overwhelmed with material, did you have a hard time finding your voice?

It wasn’t hard, I didn’t lose my voice, never that. But no, when I hit the studio, I had a lot to say and record.

Do you think going to prison added depth to your music in the tradition of other hip-hop artists like Tupac?

It  definitely added depth to my life I mean, I thank God for every experience that I’ve had. I feel like everything happened for a reason. And so yeah, the whole prison thing is a part of my journey, and a part of my struggle, and in everything I do. Even today when I talk about it, I have a true testimony. It’s not like I didn’t have one before, but you know now, I can talk about that. I can talk to other people about  not  going down the same path. It’s all a part of my testimony and a part of my journey so definitely. Everything I go through adds depth to my life.

While in prison did you learn more about yourself, or more about the people who surrounded you before?

I think I learned more about myself.  Don’t laugh when I tell you this, but I didn’t know what ovulating was. So you know, I learned more about how often my period comes, like when you feel this certain pain, it’s kind of like cramps. It doesn’t mean your cycle is coming, it just mean you’re ovulating. I know it’s funny, but I learned a lot about myself that when I was home, I never really had the time to pay attention to.

I also learned a lot about the people who love and support me. I learned a lot about my fans. When you’re out and you moving around so much, you got a fan club, when you’re a celebrity or whatever.  When fans write you, you don’t really get all of your mail directly. You might see some of it or glance a few pieces here and there, you might sign some autograph pictures to make sure your fans are cook like that,  but getting the mail directly 20-30 pieces of mail a day, it’s just amazing.  From Africa, Japan, New Zealand, ummm Turkey, that shit be like wow.

The people who came to see me and show me love, it was amazing… And yeah, I learned a quite bit about some of the people who I thought would show me love, and didn’t come through.

What happened to women in hip-hip while you were away in prison? No offense but right now, we have Nicki Minaj and Nicki Minaj? How did women get squeezed out of the game?

I can’t say what happened to women, when I was locked away, because I was locked up, but before I went in, the industry was going through a change from CDs to the internet. It was hard getting a record deal.  They weren’t promoting certain artists. I don’t know about others, but I was making music from Miami, to Atlanta, to Chicago. They weren’t trying to put us out. I was recording a bunch of stuff, but it was like a waste of time, not knowing if your work would get released or if they would give you the promotional budget you need. There were women in the game before I went in like Shana, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Remy Ma. I don’t know what happened to them.

Side Note: Now that I think about it three of those four women went to jail, to0. They were just locking up women in hip-hop from left to right.

Like on the BET Awards, once again no offense to Nicki Minaj, but they had a hard time filling the category for Best Rap Female.

Honestly, BET should have just given Nicki the award instead of trying to find someone who ain’t doing nothing or who no one has heard of.

Like I said I was out there trying, but it was hard. Not just hard for us, but look at 50 Cent, and Kanye West, they had the same problems. They had to create a buzz by creating a battle to see who could sell the most.  You have to have a gimmick. I don’t know where all of the women emcees are, but it’s depressing. It really is!

When we asked our readers what is the one thing they would like to know about you, 90% of the questions revolved around your sexuality and music. One reader wanted to know if you had a choice between Meaghan Good and Idris Elba, who would you rather?

{Laughs hard} That’s funny! I’m going to leave that one to the imagination. How about that?

MGV: Why do you think people are so fascinated with your sexuality?

I love that, I LOVE that! I hope they stay fascinated with my sexuality because that’s something that makes them wonder.  Some people feel like they know; some people feel like they wonder; and some people feel like they don’t know. So I probably will NEVER answer that question to make people keep on wondering.

MGV: It’s the best way to market yourself, too. You don’t have to be put in a box:

Definitely, it’s the best of both worlds.

One reader wanted to know, why do you dress like a guy, and what happened to the Da Brat from the What’cha Like video?

Well you can tell that reader, when I dress tomboyish, I don’t really consider it dressing like a guy. I am a full fledge woman and I like to dress however I feel comfortable. So when I feel like getting glam-med up, and throwing on the Christian Louboutins, and the weave, or whatever I’m going to do to my hair, and push up my titties in a push-up bra, throw on my La Perla, then that’s what it is and I’m comfortable either way. But when I’m performing or just, on the day to day, or in the streets, I’ll probably have my braids with my hat cocked to the back.

My braids  is more low maintenance than me having to get up every day and curl the hair and put on a full fake fledge face of make up, you know what I’m saying.

I’m cute without makeup, so I really don’t have to worry about that. I’m blessed to have good skin and good genes. You know! So they gone get that when I give it to them. I like to make people guess, and to make people wonder.  When they do see me like that, it’s like, “Damn that’s Brat!” Because when you use to seeing me, you use to seeing a P-Y-T, Pretty Young Thug, so when I throw on that sh-WAM,  when I turn into Shante on them, it’s like OMGosh.  I’m not going to give you that Wat’cha Like all of the time. I’m give it to you in spurts, so you will be surprised, and I can keep you guessing.

You’re close to Mariah Carey. What is something you can tell us about Mariah Carey that most people don’t know?

There are so many things. Let’s see…When she takes off her shoes she walks on her tippy-toes when she’s barefoot, because she can’t walk flat-foot; she so use to wearing heels. And when she was a kid she walked on her tippy toes. Her heels do not hit the ground.

Have you seen the twins? Do they look more like Mariah or Nick?

Yeah! Ummmmmm, you can’t really really tell, but I think more like Mariah when she was a baby.  You know, but they’re probably going to grow up into looking like the both of them. When they are babies you can’t really see it, until they start growing into themselves.

When is your album coming out? When can we expect to see an album from Da Brat?

We don’t have a date or anything yet, but JD and I are in the studio quite often, and I got a track from Pharrell so far.  You know! I don’t want to spill the secrets, but you know it’s coming. I don’t have a date, but as soon as I get it. I have somebody reach out to you, so you can let my friends and my fans know what’s going on with your girl.

MGV: Has Jermaine Durpi instrumental in getting you back into the music industry?

Oh! Absolutely! Absolutely.

Fonzworth Bentely, named after the character Bootney Farnsworth from the old school movie, Let’s Do It Again, starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby, just dropped his mixtape C.O.U.L.O.R.S (Cool Outrageous Lovers Of Uniquely Raw Style).  When asked if he finds it hard transitioning as a solo music artist, he replies, “Not really!”

What people may not know is that Mr. Bentley started off in music, playing the violin since the age of two via the Suzuki method, and singing in a local boy’s choir in Atlanta. Not to mention working as Diddy’s assistant and hanging around the likes of Kanye West and Andre 3000 has only helped him to understand the music industry inside out. Fonzworth Bentley has spent the last seven years writing and working on his sound. Many hip-hop blogs were surprisingly impressed by the quality of his skills, “They were probably looking for something they could talk about or laugh  about,” he says, but instead they were charmed.

Last year rumors hit the internet that Fonzworth Bentley was engaged and getting married to actress, Fuane Chambers (Watkins), most known for her role as Dorothy Baker in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Faune is pictured below with her husband at ATL Live On the Park). It’s been almost a year since the couple has been married, and Bentley describes his wife as his “rib”; a biblical reference to Adam and Eve’s union, and  just like a rib comforts and protects the vital organs so that they want be exposed, his wife does the same for him. He describes his first year of marriage as fantastic, and feels a sense of completion.

The most surprising thing about Fonzworth Bentley is his relationship with Christ. On the autobiographical song  Believe It, featuring Faith Evans, Bentley talks about being diagnosed with a malignant tumor the size of a volley ball, and how God delivered and healed him from the cancer. He has a scar on his stomach, but sees it as a beautiful sign of God’s amazing power. I asked him why aren’t so many people in the business openly sharing their religion, and he had this to say, “Religion is divisive, but spirituality resonates with most people. I don’t know how people can be apart of this business without spirituality or a belief in the Creator.” He also describes his music as Kingdom Music, and talks about his ability to counsel people through his words. He’s the type of person that people unload their troubles onto, and he always seems to have the right words to help them through their struggles, which is evident in his music. Everything he talks about in the song, Believe It, is real. He even accused me of not listening to the song, because I wasn’t sure if the song was just telling a story that sounds good, or if it was genuinely revealing his life experiences. He let it be known that it’s the latter.

Speaking of music, Bentley seems to think music is in a good place right now, and has an interesting take on today’s music:

Hip-hop is in it’s punk stage, like rock had it’s funk stage. New and exciting ideas. Music is in very exciting place. Music is in the artist hand, they are no longer pigeoned toed. People are searching for new vibes, new sounds, and new cool. People are selling out shows without being on the radio. I’m not making songs for the radio. It would be nice to make it to the radio, but you can be successful without it. Word of mouth works, and oh, my website.

Lasly, I asked Fonzworth Bentley about his first job. It seems he was a life guard at Thomsaville Pool in Atlanta. He also ran the pool behind Greenbriar, and made really good money doing so. He’s not surprised that saving lives was his first job, it seems to be a prophetic theme in his life, or should I say a metaphor for his personality; life coaching and life saving.

Chilli and I were talking about not limiting ourselves as black women to a particular race, when our conversation veered a little off topic. It’s nice to know that she has a sense of humor, and I can’t wait for you to hear her answers to some important questions. MrsGrapevine.com spoke exclusively with Royce Reed about her relationship with fellow Basket Wives cast members, and more importantly we talked about Shaunie O’Neal shopping for Royce’s replacement on the show. In an open and HONEST interview, Royce Reed tells her side of the story and sets the record straight. The more I learn about her the more I like. #TeamRoyce leggo! What happened from last season to this season that lead to all this tension between you and fellow castmates? At the end of season one, it seems like everyone became closer and you finally became a part of the Evelyn clique.

RR: I honestly have no idea. I believe last season I established real relationships with the girls on a respect level but I wouldn’t call it a friendship. We hadn’t been around each other or gone through enough to say that. However, now I believe it’s gotten to the point of personalities clashing & things are getting more and more real.

Evelyn Lozada and Jennifer Williams decided not to attend your charity event, obviously you were hurt by this, but did they ever apologize off camera, or give you a legitimate explanation for not showing?

RR: They did apologize off camera & I accepted it. It’s not like they slapped my mama so why hold a grudge. I don’t have time to dwell on things I can’t change. That was their decision & they missed a great show.

Do you think they were creating drama to steal the spotlight from your event?

RR: I’m not sure. I think when you have a group of women whose personalities are totally different you’re going to get drama anyway so I can’t say they were creating it on purpose or to steal the spotlight. I think it was generally the way they felt at that moment.

During the following episode, you said people are starting to refer them as twins “evil and wicked.” There is definitely a noticeable difference in behavior from last season, what is up with that? It certainly sparked rumors that they were trying to get their own reality spin off.

RR: I haven’t heard that about their spinoff but it wouldn’t surprise me. I’d probably watch though just to see how many people they can make cry or want to fight them. hahaha.

Sometimes Basketball Wives seems like it’s the Evelyn show. Evelyn seems to be the ring leader and Jennifer just follows along, and now Shaunie. Does Jennifer ever stand up to Evelyn? Does she ever stand up for anything?

RR: No comment. What you see it what it is. But I will say if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything & timberrrrrrr.

For two seasons now, many of the viewers feel like everyone has been picking on Royce from the start. Shaunie and the other women, claim you are not what you seem on camera, yet we haven’t seen one clip on the show where you have done something wrong to other cast members, well except maybe Gloria Govan. So is it that we are not seeing the bad side, or is what we see when it comes to Royce is what we get? What do we need to know about Royce that’s not shown both good and bad?

7.      Do you feel any empathy for Gloria Govan and how she was picked on last season, now that the tables are turned, or is that relationship just done?

RR: I do but you have to remember our fall out was due to her talking behind my back. Regardless of how I found out I did & I was hurt. I was the only 1 who stood up for her & tried to build a friendship so it bothered me more coming from her because I actually liked her. My issues with Gloria are honestly not that deep to where I’d say we couldn’t squash the drama but we will see. Life is too short to dwell on the small sh!t.

8.      Yesterday, Shaunie O’Neal dropped a bomb on us all and said she was shopping for a Royce’s replacement? She said producers have a hard time connecting you to the show and it didn’t make good business. To your knowledge is this true? Is it really business or personal? You seem to have a Team Royce that’s loud and strong.

RR: That’s the 1st I heard of that so I was shocked. For the most part I respected everyone as much as they respected me & I am actually cool with everyone else. I do love my fans & I appreciate all their support.

9.      There are lots of rumors going around about what caused the fall out between you and Shaunie. What happened? Was it really over a man? Was it because of her character change this season over last? Was it because of the reunion show?

RR: I don’t understand that at all. I said from day 1 that I signed up for a reality show & I vowed to keep it 100% real. Nothing I say or do is fake in my mind. I’m far from perfect & I make my mistakes. I’m human like everyone else. I think I’m more real than even what you see on camera. I actually do stand up for myself more than they show. To say that I’m not the person portrayed on camera would be discrediting the show as “reality.” Editing is not THAT good to where you can make someone a totally different person. I am not reading a script. Royce is not a character in a movie. Takes more energy to be someone you’re not, this is not a Steven Spielburg film.

RR: That is hilarious to me. Marlon & I have never even held a real conversation. I’ve seen him probably a total of 5 or 6 times during filming & it’s always just been hello. We don’t even hug or handshake. Whoever started that 1 was reaching & I believe attempting to start drama for no reason. We don’t even tweet or follow each other on Twitter let alone have each other’s phone number. Also, y’all should’ve known it was a lie from the start when they said he bought me expensive shoes when y’all KNOW I love my Nikes. As far as any reason for Shaunie & I falling out, I had no idea. I thought we were straight.

10.   Finally, Shaunie O’Neal said she has no ill-feelings toward you, but then called you irrelevant to the NBA, and not relevant in life. Those are some powerful words from someone you once had a relationship with and as a woman I know how it makes me feel when another woman says you have no relevancy. How did it make you feel? Where do you go from here?

RR: That definitely hit me a little bit but opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. I have always held and had my own. I am a Floria A & M University graduate. I have a Theatre Education & Humanities degree that I am using. My relevancy to the NBA is a job. I danced for 2 teams a total of 3 years. I was far more than a 4 year girlfriend & I believe that makes me more relevant than most. I have a book series coming out called College Girls that I wrote 100% by myself with no ghost writer. I’m about to do a 14 city tour for a stage play in which I’m a main character. I have my dance company Fantashique & my non profit organization called Dance To Live which piggy backs off the Michelle Obama campaign for healthy kids. So basically I’m doing a lot more than this show & people respect that. Best way to prove someone wrong is to do you. Success is the best revenge.

Rule number two, ALL bloggers steal or have stolen photos or story angles, and if they tell you otherwise they are lying like Fox News! Just because they are “legit” now, doesn’t mean they were always “legit”. If something works well for you, someone else will take it and try to make it better for them. It’s like Nicki Minaj vs Lil Kim, except you have to decide if you’re going to evolve like Nicki or breakdown on social media like Lil Kim. Point is people steal and try to out do you, take it as a challenge and find away to use it to your advantage.

Rule number three, all money ain’t good money! Over the years I have seen bloggers come and go and rise and fall, some of them were great bloggers. All the while I have managed to stay somewhere in the middle close enough to the top, but not too popular, but definitely not unknown. I make enough money that I could support myself on my own if I wasn’t married, but not enough where I would have to cross others to keep the money flowing. I am fortunate enough to have people to tell me when I have crossed lines and when I need to return to my lane, and I appreciate my blog family. Some of those that stay on top do so at a cost to other hard-working bloggers, and when they read this post they will just laugh and keep it moving. Anyway, I like to see people succeed but please don’t do it with your slip showing, or better yet you horns!

Rule number four, just do you! So if you are going to be a celebrity blogger have a thick skin because the same things that you dish out to celebrities will comeback to you and often times it will be your peers. If you are going to blog, be a hustler, hit the pavement grinding,  set a personal line of morality. Each line is different from blogger to blogger. If you find yourself crossing that line more and more…then you may have just reached your peak…or you’re on the verge of selling out.

Rule number five, it’s not always about you! Don’t try to figure out who this blog is about, because it’s not about any one blog or blogger, it’s about an atmosphere, and sometimes I am apart of that same atmosphere. For all you know this could be a personal letter to myself or my reality check. Anyway, for me to have beef or to call someone else out would be like the pot calling the kettle black. Besides, I am the type to handle it offline because I’m not thirsty.

In closing, celebrity blogging is definitely not for the weak. It’s over saturated and naturally the strong will dominate. Not to mention, sometimes it’s just hard work. Just like in real life the mainstream media is much better at pulling together for the bottom line than us.
