The Los Angeles Premiere of Precious went down this past weekend, and the stars came out to support this project. Sapphire was there to promote the movie. [Earlier I erroneously said that Precious was Sapphire. Sorry, and thanks to Marva who brought it to my attention.] Sapphire is the author of the book, and she was a literacy teacher to the real Precious. So Sapphire is not ‘Precious’ she was the teacher of the real life Precious, and the movie and book is based on her student’s life who’s name was Claireece “Precious” Jones. That’s why I need to read the book this week, so I will know what I’m watching. I heard the book is really disturbing and that the movie does not reflect half the abuse Precious suffered from both her mother and father. I have to show you this picture of Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon. This beautiful woman had twins, and showed up on the red carpet looking flawless. She’s just like Halle Berry; she just looks more and more beautiful with age. (there is a close-up in the gallery below)

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey hit the red carpet as well, proving to everyone that they’re a real couple and in love. Mariah Carey also has a role in the movie, and I heard her acting skills has improved greatly since Glitter.

Paula Patton and her husband Robin Thicke hit the red carpet. I can’t tell if she has a baby bump or not. I can’t wait to see her in her full pregnancy glow. I also can’t wait to see first pictures of the baby when he/she is born. Paula Patton also stars in the film. Tyler Perry and Oprah walked the red carpet arm in arm as executive producers to the project, and Monique hit the red carpet with her husband.

About the movie:

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

Interesting combo, I wouldn’t of thought to put Stacey Dash and The Game as each other’s love interest but for the part I guess it works.

However, this part sounds much too familiar! Yawn…..

Well well well, let the rumors start all over again, but guess which dynamic duo was seen back together again. Yes, you guessed it Aresnio Hall & Eddi Murphy at the Imagine That movie premier in Los Angeles.

Eddie Murphy brought all of his kids to the premier except for one, the one he shares with Melanie Brown, Angel Iris Murphy, and ironically guess what the movie is about:

Evan (Murphy), a corporate heavy hitter and estranged father to young schoolgirl Olivia (Yara Shahidi), who is being raised by her single mom Trish (Nicole Ari Parker). When Olivia fails to adjust to school because she withdraws into conversations with a blanket called Goo-Gaa that she refuses to part with in class, the unhappy girl is sent to live with her extremely reluctant dad. {source}

Wow he dares to do a movie about a daughter living with her mother, and he is then forced to be apart of the child’s life. Art imitating life or life imitating art…

Anyway on a lighter and more beautiful note, Nicole Ari Parker walked the red carpet in all white. Her former co-star from Soul Food, Vanessa Williams and sons, came out to support Nicole. Sorry no pics of Boris.

Last, but not least meet the little co-star of the movie Yara Shahidi. Although, I’m no longer an Eddie Murphy fan (Jimmy Got Soul), I may take my boys to see this movie and support Black Hollywood.

So, over the weekend ‘Obsessed’ pulled in 28.5 million dollars. Very impressive for a movie that only cost 20 million to make. However, I opted to not see this movie. I honestly thought the movie wouldn’t live up to the hype .

This was more of a party or a reunion than a movie Premier. People from way back in the day came out to see this film, including Monie Love and Q-Tip. I guess it was for a great cause, the life story of Christopher “Biggie” Wallace. His son was there, I have nicknamed him Lil Biggie, because he looks just like his daddy. Anyway everyone was there excpet for Lil Kim.

The Los Angeles premiere of “Cadillac Records” brought out its all-star ensemble Gabrielle Union,Beyonce Knowles, Columbus Short, Jeffery Wright, and Adrien Brody. Also in attendance were Etta James (the soul legend Beyonce’s character is based off), Lauren London, and Gabrielle’s close friends Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall.

Jeffery (who can be seen in the latest James Bond film) and Adrien pose at the After Party. Wright portrays Muddy Walters and Brody’s Leonard Chess.

Gabrielle (in Reem Acra) portrays Muddy Waters’s wife Geneva in the film. Gabrielle talked to USA Today about working with Beyonce: “I like Beyoncé because the check cleared, and if it didn’t, I’d know where to find her,” joked Union, dressed in navy blue Reem Acra. “She’s obviously incredibly talented. When you watch her transform into Etta James and really channel her and her pain and that journey, it’s powerful. As a boss and as a fellow actress, she’s the bomb.”

Columbus Short portrays Little Walter. Remember him from “Stomp The Yard“?!

Tina Knowles (Beyonce’s mom) took a snapshot with soul legend Etta James.

Beyonce is on the set of her new film, Cadillac Records, about the life of soulful jazz singer Etta James. I love Etta James and I’m excited about this film. Beyonce has some big shoes to fill and I hope she has the acting skills to pull this off. Etta James has a lot of spunk and spirit. Here’s what Mrs. Etta James had to say about Beyonce starring in the film:

“It’s a privilege and an honor to have somebody like that girl. I don’t think she looks like me, but that’s all right. They can fix that up.”

“I have my own way of putting those songs over, and I was just wondering if Beyoncé could, and my son said, ‘They’re thinking about how she looks, but mama, she can really sing!’”

“I wasn’t as bourgie as she is, she’s bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she’s like a model. I wasn’t like that… I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her.”

No fat lady big mama archetype; no guns, drugs, or ganstas; and no Wayans brothers. I’m not against those types of movies, I’m just a bit tapped out. MR. UNTOUCHABLE is documentary of the rise of Leroy Nicky Barnes as one of New York’s most infamous drug dealers. At the top of his reign, Barnes built an heroin empire that pulled in millions of dollars. Barnes was eventually arrested and prosecuted for drug related crimes, when he turned informant, and basically snitched on his partners and other high level lieutenants within his “organization”. Barnes received early release from prison for his good behavior and is now in a witness protection program because of a million dollar hit on his head. Barnes now 70 tells the story of his life.

If you are documentary buff this movie is worth seeing, but at a time when many of our entertainers and sports player are becoming victims of urban lifestyle and crimes, this movies timing couldn’t be worst. I believe this movie focus too much on the rise of Nicky Barnes and less on the fall of Mr. Barnes. This movie glorifies his life and puts him on a pedestal as an icon.

Nicky Barnes is the man you love to hate, I couldn’t find any redeeming quality in him, or any sense of remorse for selling out his wife or his partners in crime. After serving time in prison you would think he would have a new perspective on the life he lived and the destruction of his empire by his ego. You leave this movie feeling like the wrong people are in jail and that Mr. Barnes is happy about putting them there. I think most shocking is the reason he turned states witness, if you think it’s some profound reason well you’re wrong. I won’t give the ending away, but I will tell you it’s all over a woman. The fact that most of the people involved received a jail sentence of at least ten years, comes at the end of the movie as a side note.

On a positive note, if you love New Jack City as I do, you would love watching this movie. Nino Bown’s character is loosely based on the life of Leroy Nicky Barnes, and seeing the similarities between the two is quite interesting. Overall I give this movie a C+. It’s just a documentary, there isn’t any unique angle or perspective on Nicky Barnes; it’s just simply a retelling of history that glorifies murder and drug dealers. The movie is entitled MR. UNTOUCHABLE, and it doesn’t even focus on how he received the nickname, or the many times he was accused of crimes and got off. Instead it’s a biography on film that just feeds his insatiable ego.

MR. UNTOUCHABLE is a film directed by Marc Levin. It is produced in association with Damon Dash Enterprises and Blowback Productions. I usually don’t do films, but this one looks pretty good. After watching a documentary on American Ganster, this idea of the black mafia is intriquing. This movie will have some hard shoes to follow, considering the movie American Ganster will be released this year, starring Denzel Washington. It will definitely give us something to talk about. In her first major role since her Oscar-winning performance in Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson is joining the cast of Sex and the City: The Movie.

The singer and actress, 25, will portray the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker’s shoe-obsessed character Carrie Bradshaw, and is in final negotiations with the movie’s producers about details of her role, Variety is reporting.

Hudson is also in the studio working on her debut album, and is in the upcoming crime drama Winged Creatures opposite Kate Beckinsale and Forest Whitaker.

MG Says: Congrats! I am glad to see Jennifer moving on to something new and very different from Dreamgirls. I can’t wait for the new album to drop.
