AND…Don’t let me get started on the hair. I love her hair! I am so thankful that Tracee stars on Reed Between the Lines, in family of women with natural hair. So many new natural hair styles to ponder from week to week. Check out what Tracee tells VIBE Vixen about her style, and about her role on the show:

VV: Let’s talk about your style. Before when we spoke, you mentioned that some of the pieces from Girlfriends would find their way into Carla’s wardrobe. What’s the inspiration? Do you work with designers or find things out and about?

Ross: It’s stuff that’s been found out and about. The way I went about Joan and Carla is I always ask myself who this woman is. Every once in a while people say Carla is so much like Joan, and I’m like, ‘People, Tracee plays both people.’ So what you’re seeing that’s the same between Carla and Joan is not Carla being like Joan, but it’s Tracee. Tracee was Joan and Tracee is Carla. It’s so funny people don’t understand that, it makes me laugh.

VV: Do you think The Cosby Show comparisons set the audience expectations too high?
Ross: I don’t know. For some people, it’s a great context to know what the show might be, and for some people, it makes it hard because you’re comparing it to something that you have such a clear idea of. BET seems to be promoting it as the new Cosby, which I don’t think it helpful, and I don’t think makes sense.

The way Malcolm [Jamal Warner] and I have been describing it is that we are in no way, shape or form trying to be a new Cosby Show. What we are doing is taking the recipe of what Cosby did, which was a family show that was timeless and good, and use those elements.

I can’t get invested in whether it hurts the show or not. The beauty of being on BET in this day and age is that on other network they do two episodes and they pull a show from television. Sometimes that’s the greatest thing, and sometimes it just never had a chance to grow. With BET, we did 25 episodes and we’re getting a chance. It’s really wonderful working with a network that wants your show and is behind your show. The audience asked for this kind of show, BET listened and they went out and have gotten behind our show. On other networks, I don’t know if that always happens.

Remember when actor/comedian Tracy Morgan went under fire for alleged homophobic slurs at a Nashville comedy show?  Here’s his thoughts on that:

Man, I will say this, the funniest joke I ever heard Tracy say during a stand-up was, ‘C’mon man, I think gay people are too sensitive. If you can take a dick, you can take a joke.’ [Cracks up laughing.] That shit was funny to me. And it’s kind of true.’ While T.I. makes clear that he supports anyone’s sexual preference, he then connects, in his opinion, a current oversensitivity among gay people with a consequential and ironic offense of the First Amendment. “They’re like,‘If you have an opinion against us, we’re gonna shut you down.’ … That’s not American. If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay in peace, and if you’re against it you should have the right to be against it in peace.’

Hmm. I kind of think he simplified gay/lesbian rights with that last example but I’m sure his heart was in the right place.  T.I. also had shared his thoughts on Osama Bin Laden‘s death…or alleged death, rather…*side eye* Check out his skeptic thoughts on the situation, after the jump…

The conversation shifts from Muammar Gaddafi’s death—which occurred five days prior—to Osama Bin Laden’s assassination to both Eastern giant’s once empowered relationship with the U.S. government. “It’s like everybody that the U.S. was besties with, years later they’re the worst person in the world,” says Tip. “My question is what character traits do they possess now that they didn’t possess when y’all were besties? What made it go astray, and who’s to say they were on the dishonest end of that?”

The politic’n doesn’t stop there. Before an article can be selected from the “Osama Bin Laden killed” search, T.I. twists his lips in sarcastic fashion and shoots, “If that really happened.”

VIBE:  So you’re skeptical about the legitimacy of Osama’s death?

T.I.: Man, I’m a conspiracy theorist by nature. You can’t experience the federal penal system and not be somewhat skeptical.

OK! I see you, Mariah! Apparently, Mariah had a number of companies vying for her business, following the birth of her children in April.

Several weight-loss companies called her about working with them, Carey says, but when she spoke to the executives at Jenny, “all of whom had their own issues with weight,” she felt “a kinship with everybody I spoke with.”

In July, when Carey was no longer breast-feeding the twins, she started on the Jenny program, ate the company’s foods and was particularly fond of their soups. She says she mixed it up and did some of her own cooking, too, which is part of the program. She does mostly aquatic workouts for 45 minutes four or five days a week.

Speaking of her current weight, Carey says she doesn’t go by the scale but by “my dress size. Right now I am between a 4 or 6.” She’s 5-foot-9.

Anytime I’d log in to Facebook or Twitter, there would be tons of women reaching out to me, thanking me for sharing my story. Those messages gave me a lot of strength, a lot of courage. From that point on, I just wanted to help women, and Emily being a good friend of mine, it was easy for me to go on there and talk to her and be honest.

My social circle is a little bit different and so much better. You know every now and then you go through your Black Berry and go, ‘OK, is this person really worth taking up my megabytes?”‘ (Laughing)

On her success in Hollywood:

I’m very direct, always has been. But I think motherhood and maturing has definitely given me a level of compassion that is a lot more constructive, in terms of dealing with people…business. I just think I have a lot more insight on life and people. I live my life with INTEGRITY and HONESTY and sometimes it can be mistaken for arrogance, but it’s not arrogance at all.

I have more patience with things of value in my life and less patience for the nonsense.

On maturing into a grown woman and mother:

…It tickles me. I’m like, wow, I wasn’t even a mom then. I was just a young girl and I thought I knew everything and I’m such a different woman. It’s a moment in time where you can really reflect on who you were and that’s why film is so great because it’s timeless.

It does feel like yesterday [The Best Man], but then it feels like, ‘Who is that person I’m looking at?’ Forget about the character I’m playing, who is that woman, because I’m so different from who she was. The things that mattered to me back then don’t matter right now.

During the interview with Rolling Out, Keisha Knight Pulliam talks about there being a “lack” of black men for black women to date. Check out her take on the issue:

I speak to a lot of women about shows and articles that suggest there are not enough available black men for black women. Do you think that idea is being perpetuated by the media, or is there really a lack of good black men?

I don’t know if there is a “lack” of good black men. But when you haven’t taken the time to get to know yourself, be OK with you, and articulate what it is you want in a relationship, then you can’t possibly find that person for you because you don’t even know what you’re looking for. Mostly, I think that if two people don’t work out, they just aren’t the right match, and there isn’t anything wrong with that. There is someone for everyone. But if you don’t have your stuff together, it’s not going to work. You have to really judge people [based] on what’s on the inside versus the superficial.

What are three things that you think every woman can do to keep a relationship strong?

Be who you are. The biggest mistake women make is trying to be who the other person wants them to be. And if that’s the case, that’s not the person for you. You can never love another person more than you love yourself. I also think people take stuff way too seriously. I’d rather laugh — not fuss and fight. You can articulate your point without arguing. When you’re arguing constantly, you just need to say, “You’re real cool, but you’re not
for me.

What can men do to help keep relationships strong?

[Laughing] Stop hoeing. Some men have a problem with being satisfied with what they have. Men have a tendency of always having a feeling that they’re missing something over there. And that’s not always the case.

I think I was able to thrive because my parents focused on me living a normal life. I went to college at Pepperdine University, and traveled the world. I stayed out of trouble. I never snuck into parties when I was under age, etc…I also have amazing friends that kept me grounded. The friends that I have are not “yes” friends. I have known them before I was “famous” and if I was to get out of line, they would put me right back in line. I have friends and family who are honest with, and they could care less about Hollywood.

My mother always told me when I was growing up, that the key to success is an education. In our house, it was, and still is, a priority. College taught me a lot about myself.
