The Lifetime network is having a rather horrible summer. The longstanding network has been in a media storm- and the press and public have been anything but kind. Earlier in the month when news broke that Zendaya was cast in the Lifetime produced biopic of the late singer Aaliyah the network and Zendaya were pummeled with disdain and negative press. Fast forward to a week ago, soon after the network announced their plans of producing a Whitney Houston biopic things turned ugly again. This time the family of the deceased star were the unhappy ones. Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina stuck her claws into Director Angela Bassett last week yet she is now retracting and apologizing.
Bassett, who is set to make her directorial debut with the unauthorized Lifetime telepic, said she hadn’t considered casting Bobbi Kristina in the role of her mother because “she’s not an actress.” Truth is, the 20-year-old, who made her acting debut on an episode of Tyler Perry’s for Better or Worse, and used social media to call Bassett a “bitc*”.
After some significant backlash this weekend Bobbi took to twitter to apologize. ”I’m a young woman who can admit her wrongs,” Brown tweeted. “4who was offended I apologize BUT understand me before your quick to judge though.”
Reportedly, the Houston family still plans to try and cease production on the film. And with that, it seems like the drama will continue…
Tales of drama, shade and catfights are still dominating discussions days after Sunday’s high-rated BET Awards. A huge hit on Twitter, the awards inspired more than 11 million tweets yet no moment in the show garnered more attention on social media then Nicki Minaj and her now infamous acceptance speech after receiving the trophy for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at Sunday’s show. One specific quote in the speech sparked the fire. While accepting the award Minaj declared, “…when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No shade.” Today Minaj took to Twitter in an attempt to extinguish the drama.
Many were reading the quote as a direct blow to fellow nominee and rapper Iggy Azalea.
Ranting on Twitter today, Nicki eloquently set the record straight. Check out her tweets below:
With all that said, any press is good press and rumor is we are days away from receiving a new Minaj album. Her tribute to Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill seem incredibly genuine and her words to Iggy seem sincere. Hopefully this feud will die out soon so these ladies can get back to creating incredible rhymes.
Comedian Katt Williams has developed quite a riveting reputation in Hollywood. No one can deny that the man has jokes- crazy, wild comedy skills and has played to massive audiences across the world. Talent is certainly not Katt’s problem, his temper seemingly is. His track record isn’t the finest if you relive his past and last night saw the comedian perhaps even outdo himself. According to reports, Katt Williams drew a gun on someone at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood Tuesday night triggering a 911 emergency that ended with deputies racing to the scene with guns drawn.
Reportedly, Katt was being heckled by a bystander, throwing slurs at Williams over his height and race. Katt was not on stage when the heckling and subsequent gun-pilling went down. Eyewitness reports say Katt went ham!
In response, reportedly a slew of cop cars raced to the Sunset Strip and deputies pointed shot guns and bean bag guns at the club as they prepared for a confrontation. Consequently, Mr. Williams had already bounced from the premises. No arrests have officially been made.
We will continue to follow this story at details unfold…
Zendaya Coleman has a lot going for her. She has a hit television show, has made a respectably applaudable dent into the world of pop music, is a gifted dancer and is a rising name in the world of fashion. At the time, it most likely seemed like an amazing opportunity to land the role of Aaliyah in the much anticipated biopic yet the good news lasted shortly. Soon after the news broke of Zendaya’s contribution to the film the disdain for the casting choices and the production of the film in general spread like wildfire. Online protests and campaign were funded and the hate was palpable. It was just announced that Zendaya has backed out of the project.
According to a rep for the Disney Channel actress, Coleman is “no longer involved in the project,” which Lifetime is set to produce and air. Furthermore, reports state productions for the film is entirely on hold.
Adding fuel to the fire Lifetime released a statement earlier today outlining their regret in Zendaya’s decision stating, “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah.”
In the end, it seems like Ms. Coleman made the right decision. At 17, she has a million more opportunities to come her way. The tipping point was most likely Aaliyah’s family who publicly shared their contempt of the casting choices and production. All eyes remain on Zendaya as we track her next move and see if this biopic will come to fruition.
