Complete List: 2012 BET Awards Nominees; Kanye West Leads With Seven Nods

The 2012 BET Awards Nominees have been released. Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Beyonce have received the bulk of the nominations. Kanye West leads the field with seven nods, Beyonce receives six nominations, edging out hubby Jay-Z who has five. This year’s host will be Samuel L Jackson with performances by Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. Frankie Beverly & Maze will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which they so deserve. Nicki Minaj is guaranteed to win best female rapper again, maybe next year she will have more competition in her category. I can’t wait to see the old school surprise this year, it’s always my favorite part of the show. I am certain their will be a Whitney Houston tribute, can’t wait to find out who will be honoring The Voice (aka Whitney).

WOW WEE!! Chaka Khan looks FANTABULOS!!! The legendary singer was spotted on the red carpet at the 2012 FiFi Awards. Chaka posted this picture of herself on her Facebook page and she looks great. Chaka‘s lost about 60 pounds to date!

She’s even said that losing the weight makes her look more like Nicki Minaj and I can see that. Now if only Nicki didn’t do the MOST with her attire…Check out another shot of her nearly rail thin body, when you continue…

The stars hit the red carpet for yet another awards show, Billboard Music Awards. Like all awards shows there are some highlights and some low-lights. Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz hit the red carpet, dressed in black and white. That dress is working the mess out of Alicia Keys hips. I definitely saw more tweets regarding Alicia Keys’ hips than I saw tweets about Stevie Wonder’s hairline or Bobbi Kristina’s dress and wig. But I will just leave those tweets to your imagination, and focus on Alicia Keys in this dress, oh and Swizz Beatz, too.

Black and white are the colors of choice for couples on the #BBMA red carpet. Monica and husband, Shannon Brown, hit the red carpet in black and white, along with Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa, and Jason Derulo and Jordan Sparks. Speaking of Jordan Sparks…

I think she did a great job of honoring Whitney Houston by singing I Will Always Love You. Sure she is no Whitney Houston, but who is? People have undeliverable expectations when it comes to these awards show tributes, including myself. I have finally come to the realization that if the singer doesn’t fall off the stage or forget the words, then that’s the best we can hope to expect at a tribute. John Legend and Jordan Sparks didn’t fall off the stage and didn’t forget the words. So there you have it…I no longer have unrealistic expectations of these award shows tributes. Because every time I get my hopes up for an epic Whitney or Michael Jackson tribute, I am unfortunately left with, “Meh!“ and a shoulder shrug.

Brandy looks amazing in her dress. LMFAO clean up at the awards. Either you get LMFAO or you just don’t. Unfortunately I DO get them and I am a FAN. Chris Brown definitely gives us the visuals on stage shirtless with a fur coat in his mammy Tupac scarf and tail, BUT he received a lot of backlash from his peers for lip syncing. Singer Pink is his biggest critics, tweeting these words:

one day if I lipsync, I hope I do it as well as him…

Last but not least, I am touched when Bobbi Kristina accepts the Billboard Millennium Award on her mother’s behalf wearing a dress similar to one Whitney once wore, and all my other thoughts on the subject are left better yet unsaid. So I leave you with these words from Bobbi Kristina’s acceptance speech:

I just want to say thank you to everyone who’s supported us through it all. Not just from when it was good, but when it was bad, too. Just everything! Thank you so much for showing that much love, because she deserved it. She did. I’m just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman’s life. There will never be another one, never, and I thank you, all of you, fans, everyone, thank you so much.

Raise your hand if you knew that Beyoncé even wrote an article that qualified for this kind of award. *keeps hand lowered* According to MSN Music, Beyoncé wrote an article for Essence Magazine that caught the attention of officials at the New York Association of Black Journalists.

Queen Bey wrote an article called Eat, Play, Love, in which she talked about her nine month extended vacation back in 2010.

“I had talked about taking a vacation before, but always ended up in the studio after two weeks, so no one believed me. This time, though, I was serious. I was going to give myself a year to do the things I never get to do. Simple things like play with my nephew, pick him up from school, visit museums, go to concerts, see some Broadway shows, learn to cook a meal and spend time with my husband… Yes, I needed some relaxation, but I wanted inspiration too, from regular everyday things. They did not have to be over-the-top productions. I was looking for tiny moments that would speak to my heart and make me smile…”

Of course Kim Kardashian was there along with her mom, Kris Jenner, and Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay Lohan and Kim Kardashian were special guests of Greta Van Susteren of Fox News.

Austin, TX, many celebrities, athletes, and businessmen came out in support of the Beverly Kearney’s Sixth Annual Minority Mentorship Symposium during Texas Relays at the University of Texas. Ledisi, Kenny Latimore, LeToya Luckett, Keisha Knight-Pulliam, Michelle Williams, Malinda Williams, Bun B, Beverly Johnson, and India. Arie were all in attendance to at the star-studded symposium, Intimate Conversations with Greatness. The goal of the symposium according to Coach Beverly Kearney, who has been honored by BET and CNN for her excellence in education, is to give students an opportunity to understand the hard work that goes into being successful:

…annual mentorship program, which encourage real-life reality as it relates to our speakers sharing how they transitioned through failure to success. Our students need the truth of struggle to success – not just the glitz and glamor.

On Location: Gabrielle Union Awarded ‘Lexus Pursuit Of Perfection’ In Dallas At Verses & Flow

Last night, Lexus held the Verses & Flow Live private event in Dallas, a unique event that was created to honor talented up and coming music artists and spoken word poets. I had the pleasure of being on location for this event and snapped a few pics along the way! The MC for the event was comedianne Ebony Steele, co-host of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. The highlight of the evening came when Lexus presented their 2012 Lexus Pursuit Of Perfection award to this year’s recipient, actress Gabrielle Union.

Recorded words of congratulations were shown, from actor Hill Harper, who was last year’s recipient, and Gabrielle‘s boyfriend NBA star Dwyane Wade (who sang a small bit of Vesta‘s Congratulations for Gabrielle, eliciting AWWWWWWs from the women in the crowd). During her acceptance speech, Gabrielle talked about the murder of Trayvon Martin, saying that she has had difficulty sleeping and forgetting the cries for help Trayvon made during the 911 phone call. As an avid activist in the fight against breast cancer, Gabrielle accepted her award on behalf of “those who continue to fight”, whether it be for justice, for cancer research or for life. Rashida Jones looks amazing in that yellow Valentino. Kim Kardashian was also spotted not too far from the scene at the 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Gala, hosted by Elton John. I haven’t posted much on Kim Kardashian since the “divorce”, but she does look beautiful in this floor length black gown by Azzedine Alaia.

Diddy is also among the big winners of the the 84th Academy Awards. Diddy receives his first Oscar, and no, it’s not for acting, you have not missed a Diddy movie. Diddy is actually the executive producer for the documentary, Undefeated. The documentary features a football team from Memphis, TN, and the challenges the teammates face growing up in a rough area filled with poverty. The film’s ending is just a blessing. Undefeated is directed by T.J. Martin and Daniel Lindsay. When the Academy announces that the Oscar goes to Undefeated, Martin overcome with joy drops the F-bomb. He later apologizes for his choice of language, but IMO, no apology is needed: Congrats!!!

We would like to acknowledge our fellow nominees, they have inspired us. They have inspired us in so many ways, they should be up here with us, actually, that’d be effing amazing!

…First and foremost I’d actually like to apologize for this. I don’t think it was the classiest thing. It did come from the heart. It was out of spontaneity, it was completely accidental.

I also wonder who’s in charge of seating, and who’s in charge of the presenters??? Maybe it’s just me, but The Academy has a sick sense of humor pairing two of Diddy’s lovers together on stage, Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz. Two additional surprises for Diddy in one night! I wonder what the two women talked about backstage. I”m just saying, that’s a little shady Oscar, someone should have known better!!!

If you missed last night’s 84th Academy Awards, more famously known as the Oscars, here’s a brief recap of the highlights. Octavia Spencer wins an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. It’s a wondrous moment, as she nearly faints when her name is called. Spencer accepts the award with humor and tears, thanking the the cute guy who escorted her onto the stage. I can’t say she’s a better actress than Viola Davis, but if you’ve seen The Help, you know that Minnie (played by Spencer) owns the movie.

Speaking of Viola Davis, she looks amazing as she walks down the red carpet. I am so proud that she walks the red carpet for the highest honor in film, as her beautiful natural self. Davis misses the Best Actress nomination to Meryl Streep. Oddly, I think it’s an honor to be in the company of Meryl Streep, who is probably the best actor of our day. When Meryl Streep’s name is announced, she kisses her dear friend Viola Davis and brushes Davis’s cheek. I think Meryl Streep wanted Viola Davis to win, the two worked together in the movie Doubt, where Viola Davis earned her first Oscar nod. It’s a bittersweet moment…I’m not mad that Meryl Streep wins the Oscar, just sad Viola Davis couldn’t win too.

For me, Esperanza Spalding’s voice is the highlight of the night. During the In Memoriam section of the Academy Awards, Esperanza Spalding sings What A Wonderful World. Not only is she beautiful and easy on the eyes, her voice is refreshing, clean, and technical. If you do not know Esperanza Spalding, then it’s time!!! Spalding is an amazing jazz musician. She not only sings, she also composes music, and plays the the bass.

The Best Film of the Year, is The Artist; a silent movie that won big last night. Maybe the Academy is trying to tell us less is more. During the age of blockbuster, big budget movies, plus computer animation and enhanced films, a silent film wins…a french silent film… O_-

I think most people expected Nicki Minaj‘s performance on The Grammys last night to be something unique but I don’t think anyone expected what happened: a premiere of Nicki‘s new song Roman Holiday, with exorcism references, priests and levitations. Yeah.

This morning, Nicki explained her performance on the Ryan Seacrest Show. Or at least tried to. Nicki said that her alter ego Roman has been around for 2 years and this performance was a coming out party, if you will.

“I had this vision for Roman… People around him tell him that he’s not good enough because he’s not normal and he’s not blending in with the average Joe… He wanted to show that not only is he amazing… and he’s confident but he’s never gonna change, he’s never gonna be exorcised.

Oh. OK. Well. I mean. Alrighty. I just remembered being really confused about what was going on. Her singing and rapping…her blond lacefront…the exorcism. Apparently Nicki is going to also create a movie about this character and has been talking to director Todd Williams. I’m a little afraid. Check out her performance, after the jump…

In Case You Missed It: Jennifer Hudson’s Whitney Houston Tribute At The Grammys

I’m still in shock over Whitney Houston‘s sudden passing. I had family members calling me over it. The last time that happened over a celebrity death was with Michael Jackson and I still cry over that. But upon hearing about Whitney‘s death, the people over the Grammys scrambled to gather people to agree to do a tribute for the legendary singer.

Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan were scheduled to perform but at the last minute, Chaka dropped out. She tweeted the following:

As I grieve the loss of my friend and “little sister,” I don’t feel it appropriate to perform at this time. Continue to pray for the family.

I completely understand her decision and probably would feel the same, if I were in her shoes. So Jennifer took on the tribute by herself. And I loved it. It was perfect. She was visibly shaken at times but made it through. Check out the video, when you continue…

Today, the Recording Academy announced that GRAMMY nominee Adele will make her much anticipated return to the live stage on the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards. This will be her first time performing live in nearly five months since being forced to cancel a sold-out U.S. tour to undergo surgery on her vocal cords. Music’s Biggest Night^® — hosted by two-time GRAMMY winner LL COOL J— takes place live on Sunday, Feb. 12 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

“I’m immensely proud to have been asked to perform at this year’s GRAMMY Awards,” said Adele. “It’s an absolute honor to be included in such a night, and for it to be my first performance in months is very exciting and of course nerve-racking, but what a way to get back into it all.”

Two-time GRAMMY winner Adele has six nominations: Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Short Form Music Video for “Rolling In The Deep”; Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for 21; and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Someone Like You.”

HUGE Night for the cast of “The Help” at the Screen Actors Guild Awards

It was a HUGE night for the cast of “The Help” as cast members swept the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The cast walked away with the most highly coveted award of the night, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Don Cheadle presented Octavia Spencer with her first SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her role as Minny Jackson. She dedicated her award “to the downtrodden, the undeserved, the unprivileged and overtaxed, whether emotionally, psychically or financially.”

In what some might consider an upset, Viola Davis was voted best among her peers for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. She looked stunning in her Marchesa gown as she accepted her award. She shared that she wanted to be an actor since the age of 8 and that in this industry there comes a lot of rejection, but it was the work of Meryl Streep that inspired her while she was in college. Ironically, it was Streep-who stated in her SAG Award acceptance speech three years prior for the movie Doubt, in which she co-starred with Viola-“[to] the gigantically gifted Viola Davis — my God, somebody give her a movie!”

Of course, we can’t talk awards show without red carpet fashion.

Viola Davis And Octavia Spencer Both Nominated For An Oscar!!

The Oscar Nominations were just announced this morning and I know a couple of ladies who are hype this morning! Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer BOTH have been nominated for Oscars for their roles in the drama The Help! This will make Viola‘s second nomination and Octavia‘s first nomination.

The Oscars will be live on ABC on Sunday, February 26th at 7 PM Eastern. Viola just won a Golden Globe for her role as Aibileen Clark just week over a week ago. Viola is nominated in a very tough category, in my opinion. Other actresses joining Viola in the Actress In A Leading Role category are Glenn Close, Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. Octavia will be against Bérénice Bejo, Jessica Chastain (Also from The Help), Melissa McCarthy and Janet McTeer in the Actress In A Supporting Role category.

I dismissed the rumors because basically there isn’t any picture proof, even though, I DO believe in my heart of hearts the ex-couple have been communicating for awhile. But today, we may have some proof???

Rihanna and Chris Brown partied at the same club last night, fueling growing rumors they’re back together. The two singers left Greystone Manor — a West Hollywood club — separately, but they were both definitely there at the same time. {TMZ}

I guess LA is really small because these two keep going to the same places, but not actually crossing paths. Rihanna and Chris Brown are both scheduled to attend at the Grammys, and I think all of this publicity is leading up to their first public re-union. Chris Brown’s and Rihanna’s publicists were both asked about their secret love affair, and this is what their publicists had to say about those rumors:

Chris Rep tells ABC News, “He and Rihanna are just friends. He is with his girlfriend, Karrueche, and is not cheating.”

While Rihanna’s rep declined to comment on the issue. *side-eye* Anyway, according to eye witnesses, the two were spotted at club, Greystone Manor, but they did not interact, and Karrueche, was riding shot-gun with Breezy. I guess, LA is just a small place after all, or someone is being messy:

Chris, 22, was seen leaving the club through the front door, getting into his Range Rover with a group of friends, while Rihanna, 23, left through a side door hopping into a waiting SUV with a bodyguard.

Both appeared to be in jovial moods, with Chris beaming from behind the wheel, and Rihanna, who had just arrived back from holidaying in Hawaii hours earlier, smiling and laughing as she waited to be whisked away in the back seat of her ride.{Chris Brown & Rihanna Party At Club Together}

Publicly, they are getting closer and closer. It’s just a matter of time before their teams prepare for this re-union publicity wave. Hopefully it all happens before the Grammys in February, but if not, we will be watching the awards show to see how the cameraman pan the audience.
