Tomorrow will mark the 20th year since Nas released his debut album Illmatic, and 20 years later not only has he been labeled as a hip hop legend in just that city of New York but worldwide. For the past few months the celebration for the 20th anniversary of the legendary album has been endless. This week Nas released Illmatic XX, which is a remastered version of the original album along with unreleased remixes and an unreleased track, “I’m a Villian”. Aside from that, there has also been a number of interviews that have been released. These interviews shed light on Nas’s upbringing in the Queensbridge section of Queens, NY. Along with reflections from hip hop heavyweights who talk about Nas’s journey as well as his huge impact on the hip hop game. Nas also performed the entire Illmatic album in it’s entirety last month at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as apart of his “One Mic: Hip Hop Culture Worldwide Festival.
Just this past Wednesday the documentary Time Is Illmatic premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Directed by One9 and written by Erik Parker, the documentary talks about the making of the album as well as the influence it has had on the hip hop culture and even the musical impact Nas’s father Olu Dara has had on him.

A few months back in a promotional video for Revolt TV, Timbland let the entire world in on a little secret. He revealed that he was working on a new Michael Jackson project and now new details have emerged about that project. The new Michael Jackson project has been titled Xscape and it will be released on Epic Records along with Michael Jackson’s Estate. Aside from Timbaland working on the album, other producers include Rodney Jerkins, Stargate and others with L.A Reid serving as executive producer.
The project will consist eight unreleased tracks that have been “contemporized” by producers. The deluxe edition of the album will have the original versions of these songs as bonus tracks.
Xscape will be released on May 13th
New recording artist August Alsina definitely has yet another hit on his hands. He is currently gearing up for the release of his debut album Testimony, which releases on April 15th. Before the project drops he released another single off of the album, “Benediction” features Rick Ross and once again August gets real on the track and reflects on his life struggles. It’s the realness that he sings about that has made him a fan favorite and this track is definitely going to be another hit. Recently August released the full tracklisting for the album, as well as both covers for the regular edition and deluxe edition of the album.

Nessa from MTV’s Guy Code and Girl Code recently caught up with west coast rapper YG to talk about his debut album My Krazy Life, which hits stores next week on March 18th. They also chatted about his “My N*gga Remix” featuring Nicki Minaj and his new single “Who Do You Love” featuring Drake. In the interview he also talks about his recent audition for the NWA Movie, which will be produced by Ice Cube himself. After the interview Nessa had YG read Dr. Seuss’s Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? to a group of children, which turned out to be really funny.

This morning Ashanti stopped by New York’s Power 105.1′s Breakfast Club to talk about her new album Braveheart, which is in stores now. This is the first album she is releasing independently, so she talks about the struggle of having her own label and being in charge of every detail going into the album. She also talks about how her music career kind of dismantled when Murder Inc. started going through their legal issues and her current relationship with Irv Gotti and Ja Rule. However, the main topic of the interview was of course her relationship with Nelly and whether the rumors were true about the two being back together. Just in case you have been under a rock recently, Pharrell has been having a great year thus far with his hit singles “Happy”, “Get Lucky” and his feature on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”. At this years Grammy Awards he took home three awards and he is nominated for Best Original Song at this Sunday’s Academy Awards. His new album G I R L will release next week on March 3rd, and although the album is highly anticipated there was a little controversy surrounding the cover. Apparently, there were some people who were a little salty because they didn’t see any black females on the cover. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, he talks about his new music, he responds to critics who have something to say about the cover and he even reveals the secret to his flawless skin.
