Guess who will be producing the upcoming Aaliyah biopic? Wendy Williams! The television personality announced her executive role on Friday.
“I’m excited to exec produce the Aaliyah @lifetimetv movie w/ @DebraMChase,” tweeted Williams. “Prod starts later this month and @AlexShipppp will play Aaliyah.”
Zendaya Coleman was originally slated to portray the late R&B star but backed out after feeling that the production process was moving too swiftly. “The production value wasn’t there,” said the star in a recent video. “There were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation.” Zendaya further explained, “I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own, and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so; therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project.”
Coleman also addressed those critics who said she wasn’t “black enough” to portray the late singer telling Instagram fans,
“Let me just explain something. The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough, or I wasn’t black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that.”
The Disney star congratulated Alexandra Shipp on her new role before ending her address to social media. The Aaliyah biopic is expected to debut this Fall.
