Common Says Black Captain America Is ‘A Beautiful Thing’
The Falcon will be the first Captain America of African American descent, and rapper Common says it’s about time. The artist recently spoke with media about Marvel’s decision to bring diversity to its American hero, telling reporters that the transformation is wonderful.
“It’s a beautiful thing,” said Common. “It’s the way the world is so the diversity in comic books is just showing where we are as people.” The rapper added, “I think we got to see superheros in diversity so we all know that we’re all like, together.”
Anthony Mackie also commented on Marvel’s decision to have an African American as Captain America tweeting, “Dreams do come true” next to a photo of an African American boy dressed as his beloved superhero.
In addition to bringing diversity to Captain America’s story, Marvel has also decided to change the tone of Thor by turning Odin’s son into the demigod’s daughter. It will certainly be interesting to see how the publishing company writes her into the story.
