Though critics have served mixed reviews on Chris Rock  and his  hosting duties at Sunday’s BET Awards, viewers certainly tuned in to see what he had in store. The nearly four-hour show scored 7.9 million viewers Sunday night, up from 2013’s 7.8 million audience. That total is good enough to make Sunday’s night’s telecast cable’s most-watched awards show of the season.

The awards were also the second highest rated telecast in the network’s history trailing only behind the massive success of the 2009 BET Awards which aired only a few days after the passing of Michael Jackson. To put the success into perspective, the ratings heroically eclipsed other cable-aired awards shows this year, like the MTV Movie Awards – which drew 3.2 million viewers on April 13.

The BET Awards also dominated social media on Sunday night, with 11 million tweets about the event.
