Say What? Woman Agrees To Make 300 Sandwiches For Engagement Ring

It doesn’t happen a whole lot but some days there are just times when I read an article and I just considering getting off the internet for the day, because I just can’t deal.  Well, this one made me think about hitting that off switch again.  The New York Post shared the story of one Stephanie Smith, a young woman who’s on a quest to fulfill her boyfriend Eric‘s request for 300 sandwiches.  The end result?  An engagement ring.

300 Sandwiches Stephanie Smith Say What? Woman Agrees To Make 300 Sandwiches For Engagement Ring

One lazy summer afternoon just over a year ago, I finally gave in. I assembled turkey and Swiss on toasted wheat bread. I spread Dijon mustard generously on both bread slices, and I made sure the lettuce was perfectly in line with the neatly stacked turkey slices.

Eric devoured the sandwich as if it were a five-star meal, diving in with large, eager bites. “Babes, this is delicious!” he exclaimed.

As he finished that last bite, he made an unexpected declaration of how much he loved me and that sandwich: “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!

So Stephanie then started the site, 300Sandwiches.com, and start creating layered culinary pieces.  To-date, she’s made 176 sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert.  You know, I can’t knock her hustle because she HAS managed to turn this into a profit, getting attention from famous chefs like Emeril Lagasse for her work, but the beginning of the article rubbed me the wrong way.  Stephanie wrote about how her boyfriend would tell her in the mornings “You’ve been up for 15 minutes and you haven’t made me a sandwich?” *Needle scratch*  I can only hope that as she’s creating all these sandwiches, she’s also keeping her eyes open to other important aspects of the relationship. It would a shame to get to sandwich 300 and get nothing but a dap.  What do you guys think?  Would you fulfill his request for an engagement ring?

  2. I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with catering to an appreciative man, and to be honest, I’m old skool and feel like feeding him is your job. But it’s all in the way he treats you. If he was joking, then his comment was acceptable, but seriously saying “You’ve been up for 15 minutes and still haven’t made me a sandwich?” is unacceptable even on a bad day. Don’t get me wrong, I probably would’ve made it too(because I was taught you don’t let your man leave home with an empty stomach, cause the woman down the street might be more than willing to cook for him)…But I also would have let him know that his comment came off as inappreciative to me, and he would’ve owed me an apology in my eyes.. JMO.

  3. Doubts aside, Stephanie Smith plods ahead, resigned that this is her lot in life, to be glamorous, to report for the NY Post, to be a modern day woman who is not afraid to question and challenge things (even the way she goes about getting married ) but all the while slightly annoyed that she has regressed to a traditional semblance of what the modern day woman has fought so hard to avoid becoming: her man’s lunch keeper.

  4. I would do it too!!

  5. WHAT THE WHAT???!!

  6. Dumb. I’d never. To make him marry me? no. She should also keep it mind that those 300 sandwiches could represent his desire to demand something outrageous of her every time he wants his way. It makes her look like the woman needing a man, a ring and a wedding instead of them needing each other, a partnership. Where’s the balance? To each is own I guess. Whatever…

  7. Wow. I’m embarrassed for her.

  8. women will do ANYTHING to get married

  9. She’s a better woman than me. I would have dumped him when he came home with his hair dyed that colour. And killed him when he demanded 300 sandwiches. I am not a damn Subway “artist”.

  10. That girl is too cute for that feminine looking dude. I don’t think it’s going to laugh since this guy is making their relationship (and marriage) a joke. I hope he has good money cause he sounds like a tool.
