Gabby’s Mom Speaks Out: “What Have You Done To Contribute To Her Dream?”

Goodness! Natalie Hawkins, the mother of Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas speaks out on this hair issue that just will not die. In an interview with Fashionista.com, again the question regarding the drama of Gabby’s hair re-surfaces, and I think Mrs. Hawkins says it best. First she wants you to know: Why is Gabby’s hair any of your concern when you didn’t help Gabby get to the Olympics. Secondly, Gabby is 16 and lives with a host family who didn’t know anything about taking care of black hair.

She [Gabby to her mother] said,”Really?! I won two gold medals and made history and my hair is trending?” So we laughed about it. We made a huge joke out of it and I was quick to try to diffuse that situation. Because I thought, “How ignorant is it of people to comment on her hair and she still has more competitions to go. Are you TRYING to ruin her self confidence? She has to go out there and feel good about herself, and if she feels good about herself on that floor, who are YOU to criticize her? What have YOU done to help contribute to her dream, that you felt it necessary to put it out there so that she could see it.

I love Mrs. Hawkins. But she is not done. She has this to add regarding Gabby’s training schedule, and Gabby living with white people:

I was trying to get her into a hair appointment and I wanted to move her training schedule around and he said to me, “She’s beautiful. You don’t need to change her hair. We need to focus on training. Hair is secondary. We make time for that after training. Don’t mess with my training time.

And then too, I don’t think people realize sometimes that she doesn’t live with me. She lives with a white host family and they don’t know anything about taking care of her hair. And there’s no black salons in their area [in Iowa]–not one. We had to work really hard to find a stylist to come and do her hair.

Now there you go straight from Gabby’s mother. I feel ashamed that she had to do an interview like this, or an interview about money. {Gabby’s Mother Speaks Out About Hair…read more}

If you’re also wondering about Gabby’s father, well he is a DEADBEAT and hasn’t been there for Gabby. {Gabby Speaks On Her Deadbeat Father}

It was really hard for us growing up — my dad had left us, so he wasn’t really in the picture anymore. So my mom had to front all these bills. My dad didn’t really pay the child support. He was short [on money]. It was definitely hard on her part, and she had to take care of me and the rest of my siblings.

That’s for everyone digging in the mother’s pocketbooks. I just hope God lifts this family up, and protect them with a bubble from the naysayers.
