First Friday of the new year and it seemed to come upon us quickly! And just on time, one of those news stories that are so absurd it’s hilarious. There’s a senator by the name of Vaneta Becker is moving to make sure everyone pays homage to the national anthem. By passing a bill that would fine anyone who jacks up the song.
Yes, seriously. For any event that’s sponsored by a public school or university, that’ll be a $25 ticket if you don’t sing for your life.
Her legislation isn’t aimed at people who sing the national anthem badly, Becker said, but rather those who change the words — like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, who changed “home of the brave” to “home of the Indianapolis 500″ while singing the national anthem before the 2001 race.
“It’s not like we’re going after anyone’s ability to sing,” Becker said in an interview Tuesday. “It’s more that we just want them to respect the words and the tune as it was originally intended and we normally sing it.”
I wonder if it passes, if they’d be able to back bill other flubs? Y’all remember when Olympic Runner Carl Lewis messed it up? No?
