While reading Huffington Post, I cam across this interesting article from Pastor Michael W. Waters of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church, discussing the state of hip-hop and groups like Lil B and Odd Future that seem to reject spirituality for a more demonic violent based style of rapping. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (their full name) embrace freedom of speech through the promotion of violence, blasphemy, killing, and even rape. Like many of you, I believe in freedom of expression in hip-hop, but when teens are exploring the occult and rejecting God out right, is it time to really be concerned?
Pastor Waters is not the only person expressing concern, Chris Brown made the same point on twitter, which landed him in a beef with Frankie Ocean that almost turned violent.
All this demonic music is wack as ish, what happened to be being happy. I never claim to be no saint but by no means am I trying to promote death, violence, and destruction with my music.
Pastor Waters acknowledges that hip-hop has always been violent and misogynous, but even still there was always an underlining sense that rappers believed in God, and felt some kind redemption despite their lifestyle. Think about songs like Only God Can Judge Me, Heaven For A G, Jesus Walks, Crossroads, and A Minute For Your Son. But with groups like Odd Future, God seems to be the enemy.
Do you think the new generation of hip-hop is heading in the wrong direction or is it just freedom of expression? Check out some of these lyrics! SMH!
