A senior editor of the Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates, has a scathing critique of Kanye West and his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The brother says, the way in which Kanye West uses race in his songs and videos make him a casual racist. Too often West betrays white women as objects tossed away like trash, and if the tables were reversed people would call someone like John Mayer a racist.
All told, the album strikes me as incredibly, almost casually, racist. On some level, I wonder what would have become of John Mayer, had he cut a video with dead black women strewn about and invoked black women throughout his lyrics in the manner Kanye does.
That’s not all! Ta-Nehisi Coates saves his most scathing critique for the end of his article, continue reading to find out why Coates think Kanye West fails:
Antoine Dodson is the gift that keeps on giving. His five minutes of fame has been extended and the pop icon, yes icon, is taking full advantage of his fame. Paparazzi caught the entertainer in McCarran International Airport in Las vegas with a fresh new do. I’m just saying, he knows how to get the attention.
I missed my Old School Friday family, and what better way to reunite than celebrating Teena Marie. I want to play all my favorite Teena Marie songs just so I can revisit the past, but I’m going to stick to the rules and just pick one song. This was a really hard choice, but I’m rolling with Dear Lover. I just love the intro! Teena Marie demonstrates the octaves in this song.
I’m also happy to announce that we have our own website now, where you can get updates, sign-up to participate, and get the themes. Check it out Old School Fridays.
