A senior editor of the Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates, has a scathing critique of Kanye West and his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The brother says, the way in which Kanye West uses race in his songs and videos make him a casual racist. Too often West betrays white women as objects tossed away like trash, and if the tables were reversed people would call someone like John Mayer a racist.
All told, the album strikes me as incredibly, almost casually, racist. On some level, I wonder what would have become of John Mayer, had he cut a video with dead black women strewn about and invoked black women throughout his lyrics in the manner Kanye does.
