The beautiful and talented Nia Long is featured on the latest cover of PRIDE magazine. She even did an interview where she talks about singers turned actresses who haven’t yet mastered the craft. Here’s what she had to say when asked about the movie ‘Obsessed’ and singer Beyonce.
“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment, but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes,’”
She also goes on to say, “If you’re a singer not an actress, you should sing. If you’re a rapper, you should rap,” “If you take time to develop your craft, God bless you. Jamie Foxx is an example of both [actor and singer].”
She then adds “If you were able to take all the Black actresses and the choices we’ve made collectively, it’s a pure reflection of what you see on film. People need to work. But the content? The opportunities for Black actresses are more widespread today, but the quality has suffered.”
Many blogs and websites have already chimed in with their opinions and have even created the non-existent drama between Nia Long and Beyonce. Let me first say that I fully agree with her statement. However, there was no point in that quote where she mentioned Beyonce’s name.
I think most of us can agree that Beyonce is not a great actress but yes, a great singer and performer. Give Nia a break, I don’t believe there was any malice intended. Facts are facts and if Beyonce happens to fit the bill, well, what more can I say.

I think Beyonce’ was one of the performers that Nia was referencing (not that there is anything wrong with that). She may have seen Dreamgirls and wasn’t all that impressed with Beyonce’s performance. Like you said, Nia’s intent wasn’t malicious. I don’t blame her for being frustrated because it’s hard enough for black actresses just competing among themselves for quality roles.
As a side note, I think that Regina King is one of the smartest actresses around. I think she realizes that Hollywood is only going to allow one black actress in the elite circle at one time. Instead of headlining films that may not do well at the box office, Regina has made a career of doing supporting roles/character parts in major motion pictures. I don’t think she’s been out of work since “227″.

God gave us all gifts (and some more than one), so why should we limit how we used them? So what if some of the singers aren’t good actresses/actors! In this day in age it’s all about image, a pretty face, sex appeal, a booming body and record breaking box-office revenue. I say…get over it Nia and move on.

@ Malcom:
It’s hard for actress with talent, and I understand where she’s coming from. It would be nice if film makers were more interested in acting, but at the end of the day, that’s what Broadway is for.

@ Royalty:
I understand your point, but I think Nia Long saw Obsessed, and was thinking to herself, Beyonce is not helping. Sometimes people are out of their leagues, doesn’t mean they should quit, but I wish they chose more wisely what movies to make based on their talents.

What a sad statement. So being good at what you do doesn’t matter anymore?! Because Beyonce’ is indeed one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen.

Didn’t Beyonce’ produce “Obessed” with her father. So basically she casted herself. Nia needs to get smart like Jada Pinkett-Smith and start directing and producing. When you have that much power [and money] you can create your own films. I do understand where she’s coming from, but it’s the same debate over models and actresses/singers. Models are losing big bucks because Hollywood is taking their covers and endorsements. Nia is on the cover of Pride. Don’t you think that she made many models mad. I’m pretty sure they were talking about her too, how she’s not tall, thin, beautiful enough, and etc.
Nia needs to stop putting the blame on others because she’s not getting much work. She needs to work on her craft more and show some versatility. Then maybe she’ll get more roles. She’s not an all-that actress herself. She needs to be a TV actress.

Come on people! You know good and well Beyonce has no business acting. I think it is wonderful that she has been as successful as she has in the music business. Truth be told, Beyonce is about commercialism, not talent or quality; even in her own craft. She simply flexes her money muscles and gets a movie made. Check out all of her performances — it’s as if she is reading the material. At least Nia has a focus. Please give us a break, Beyonce!!!
