I have to try to take myself out of the mind set of Kesha Ni’Cole Nichols. It didn’t happen to me, so why am I so angry. I’m angry because Jefferson didn’t have the balls to break-up with his fiance in person, he had the audacity to send her an e-mail just hours before the ceremony. I’m sure she had her hair and nails done, and all her friends around her, just waiting to put on her dress. Now I don’t condone murder like in the Steve McNair case, that’s just wrong, but I probably would have thrown some marbles, ice cubes, and banana peels along his path, just hoping he would break an ankle or two. Anyway Jefferson has something to say about the matter.
In an interview with New York Post where he appeared choked up, Jefferson explained why he made the decision to break it off:
There was a lot of stress and tension in the relationship. We’ve been through a lot — but we just couldn’t continue.
But at least Nichols got a nice parting gift — Jefferson, who was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the San Antonio Spurs last month, said he’s giving her a “six-figure” settlement so she can start a new life.
“I won’t say a negative word about Kesha. She is one of my best friends,” said Jefferson, who courted for nearly five years.
He said things came to a head when they celebrated July 4 in LA, a week before their planned July 11 wedding at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental on Columbus Circle.
After Nichols boarded a plane back to New York the next day, Jefferson said, he sent her the devastating e-mail.
“Sometimes you might write an e-mail to get your thoughts down right,” he explained.
After Nichols — and the message — arrived in New York, the couple spoke by phone for two hours, Jefferson said.
“It was a conversation Kesha and I had,” he said, adding only that it was “a combination of things” that led to the split.
Jefferson said they haven’t spoken in a week.
“It’s been an emotional time for both of us,” he said. “I know she’s hurt. I’m hurt, too.”
Of the money he’s giving Nichols, Jefferson said, “I’m not trying to buy her off. She has a lump sum to help her move on.”
He added, “I’ve made my mistakes in this relationship, 100 percent. But at the end of the day, there were some people who were responsible for the demise of it.”
He insisted a rumor he’s gay had nothing to do with the breakup.
“I’m not gay,” Jefferson said. “That couldn’t be any further from the truth. I have nothing to hide.”

Were you disappointed it didn’t do well in the charts?
Very disappointed because I don’t go in the studio for my health.
I felt like I was ready to go, it seemed like it was doing well at first. So I understand you cannot depend on your label and your management for 100% backing.
I know there were things that I had to do, or could have done, that maybe I didn’t do as well – maybe I didn’t have a good enough internet presence. Sometimes artists have to market themselves now.
I’m still disappointed, but I was like, ‘if God can give me an ounce of what you give others then I would be okay’. I don’t ask for much. I gave out good music – that’s enough.
Are you envious of the level of success that Beyonce has achieved?
I wouldn’t say I’m envious but I know that I can have number one songs.
We all can. Myself, Kelly [Rowland] – she’s got a number one song now with David Guetta [When Love Takes Over]. It’s possible.
Destiny’s Child, we’re all solo. There’s no reason why A, B and C can’t have their own levels of success in lanes A, B and C. I might get in trouble for saying that but, oh well.
And what I hate people to do is, they don’t think because I’m not visible over here with the number ones, they think I’m not doing anything or they think I’m not as successful.
But I’m in the freaking West End! I’m the first African-American woman to play his role in the West End!
But it’s okay. The other day I was walking around London, nobody made a fuss – I like that. I wanna be respected for what I do but I don’t wanna be bombarded and can’t go anywhere.
So that’s what I have over Beyonce. I can go anywhere I want.
