To be honest my mother was not that strict on music. She didn’t allow cursing, or strong sexual content. So one of the groups that was band from my house was 2 Live Crew, and guess what it’s also banned from this site, even thought I use to jam it back in the day. When we had card parties my mom would play what she called “grown folks music” and would send all the kids outside or upstairs. Whenever I got caught singing one of these songs, one of the old cats would say, “what you know about that.” So this Friday I’m going to chose one of those what-you-know-about-that-songs. You know the ones you loved as a kid, but didn’t know anything about it until you got older, and if you got caught singing you were being too grown or too fast…

LOL! The key was that point when you really *did* know what you were singing about but had to *pretend* that you were still clueless. Equally problematic–when you knew what the song was talking about but you had to listen to/watch your Mom and her friends waving their hands and testifying to it. (Ew.) Or was that just at my house? LOL
Happy OSF!

My mom was also not to strict on music but then again I had my head phones and she had hers! She was also a music fanatic so when she turned her music up I was in the clear to play mine!!!
As we lay was one that I played strictly in the headphones!!

You are not the only one, the song Woman to Woman and If You think You’re Lonely Now were the songs my mom would wave her hands to in testimony. On Woman to Woman, thinking back, I want to know details…

I remember I was in the kitchen frying chicken and had my headphones on, singing “Secret Lovers.” My mother walked in from work and was standing behind me, listening. I turned around and she had this look on her face like, “What are you singing that for?”
I didn’t get to go out with my friends for two weeks after that…I totally didn’t understand why.

My mom didn’t pay attention to what I was listening to because I don’t think she knew just how much the music was changing. She knew the music I liked that I pointed out to her, but I knew not to point out certain singers like Prince.
She did know I liked “Me and Mrs. Jones” but I think she figured I didn’t know what they were talking about in that song and if I did, then she knew I knew she wouldn’t approve of me following in Mrs. Jones’s footsteps. She passed last month, and I wrote about her here.
Boy, songwriters certainly do write romantic songs about sneaking around, don’t they? Enjoyed your selection. Happy OSF!

Happy OSF! Secret Lovers is a song that folks need to seriously listen to before they take it to the real world. Great song; lousy RW!
I went there with 2 Live Crew as my response to this week’s theme!
peace, Villager

Both of these songs are those soft but potent jams that have you singing along but which you cannot forget the real story behind the lyrics. Great choices.

Those were nice “melodies”. The tune was awesome. I was into the music part and not the lyrics. I wonder if that excuse will work? It probably would have worked if I was the parent. I’m kinda slow on things like that. Happy OSF!

Ha Ha! I remember those “what you know about that” songs!
I’m having flashbacks to the time moms caught me and my cousins singing “Darling Nikki.” That was a mistake. LOL!

Great choices these are like some my favorite songs especially anything by Shirley Murdock, I ooo so love her song “Husband”… I must say I hold “Secret Lovers” very dear to my heart. My mom never really controled my music but when she caught me singing them it was “You dont know nothing about what that song says”.. lol, little did she know listening to her songs made me wise beyond my years..
