Erykah Badu in an interview with Giant Magazine gives up a small glimpse into her relationships with Andre 3000 and Common.
“I know about the backlash, the ‘Erykah Badu, if you look at her, she’ll make you change gods and wear crochet pants’ backlash,” she says. “But nobody looks at the things that those people have given to me.”
What have they given you?
“Just so much musical freedom. Common is the most humble person I ever met. Kind and generous. He reinforced that in me. Andre is very creative and artistic. All of that that you see of him, that’s all him. That’s how he is, and that gave me a creative push, too.”
Although Badu is fairly cryptic when discussing her old beaus, she allows this brief, whispered indulgence.
“With Andre, we were both very young, so we didn’t know what we wanted or anything. We just knew we were in love, and we didn’t care who saw us. With Common, it was a little bit more mature.”

She’s great. Check her out in “House of D” … loved her rendetion of “Sweet Melissa”. She’s got acting chops too. The way her eyes glaze over when the boy speaks of losing his mother —subtle and soulful. She’s so cool … I’m a 49 year old white woman and I just wanna be ERYKAH!

@ Fresh: I get her…her style is artistic and ever changing and evolving. Love her music, sometimes is too much artistry and not enough soul for my taste, but I can definitely appreciate the talent and energy.

@ quick: I love Giant, too
@Jo: Oh! No don’t go changing on me…I’ve seen “House of D”, I’m a big indie film buff. The boy in that film played in Huff which was one of my favorites, until Showtime canceled it. Anyway she did give a great performance, you should also check her out in Cider House Rules.

She is a very interesting person and not one to be what society thinks she should be.
I loved the next lifetime song, that and Tyrone are my favorite Badu songs!

@ Jo: I like the movie, but not as much as you. I appreciated the 3-D view of a pimp.

Erykah is one of my favs! She is extremely intelligent, very wise, and beautiful both inside and out. She is not afraid to “do” her, and I just can’t help but love that. I love her soul and her light, and the way she’s lite…
