New York Times Report:
WHITE PLAINS — Marion Jones, the track and field star who pleaded guilty in October to lying to federal agents about her use of performance-enhancing drugs and her connection to a check-fraud case, was sentenced to six months in prison at the United States District Court here on Friday.
United States District Judge Kenneth M. Karras’s decision on jail time agreed with the recommendations of prosecutors and sentencing guidelines, which were well below the maximum five years that she faced. But he also ordered her to perform 400 hours of community service during each of her two years of probation.
For about 20 minutes, the judge explained his reasoning, saying that although she admitted to the crimes, he was not convinced that she had come clean about her knowledge of the drugs that she was taking.

Poor baby. I truly do feel bad for Marion. I really hate when the legal system shakes that gavel at pro athletes for drug use. I mean, how ignorant can the legal system or the public be about the use of drugs in top amateur and professional sports!? As a competitive bodybuilder, I know how much our sport is involved in doping, but we (the competitors) and the fans are all aware that a great deal of the physiques that we compete against or see on stage are not built naturally. Duh! Only an idiot would think a human being could walk around carrying 250 lbs. of muscle with 2% body fat and be natural. Again…duh! So anyone that even thought Marion Jones was THAT fast naturally, they are either naive or just plain dumb as h_ll and unfamiliar with the nature of finely tuned athletes.
Ultimately, the government and the sports organizations can not blame them. If anything, the powers-that-be are more responsible for the use of drugs in professional sports because they pay these athletes hundreds of millions of dollars per year to perform at their best level all of the time and this can usually only be done in an ‘enhanced’ state.
My heart goes out to Marion, to Barry, to Jose, to Roger and all of the athletes that are having the hammer come down on them for doing what they were paid to do, which is perform, and perform at their best all of the time.
The government is some bullsh_t!

I read about her on Wikipedia and it sounds like she’s done a lot of illegal stuff. Yeah, she can run like crazy but she’s also crazy.

I totally agree Marcus. I know that she brought a lot of this on herself, but at this point my heart is just heavy for her and her family. And you can rest assured that they are making damn sure that this news is spilled everywhere. My prayers are with her.

@ML: I don’t know, I have thought about it, and I am mad. The only thing I look forward to in the Olympics is track & field, and I looked up to Marion Jones, and I am disappointed. I understand the pressure, but it’s possible she has been doping for at least 6 years, and has lied so many times. I feel for her in the way, but a part of me feels she would still do it, if she knew she could get away with it. However, I think they need to go after the coach and everyone involved, they encouraged and may be even pressured her into it.
I think mostly, she is paying for her greed. Her desire to stay in the limelight and be idolized. She should have bowed out gracefully years ago…

I don’t think she should have to do any jail time. Have her pay a fine and be through with it. It’s absolutely unfair.
