Excerpt from Oprah.com:
Inspired by a true story, The Great Debaters chronicles the journey of Professor Melvin Tolson—played by Denzel Washington—a brilliant but volatile debate coach who uses the power of words to shape a group of students into a historically elite debate team. A controversial figure, Professor Tolson challenged the social mores of the 1930s and was under constant fire for his unconventional and ferocious teaching methods, as well as his radical political views.
In their pursuit for excellence, Tolson’s debate team, which hails from a small African-American college in Texas, receives a groundbreaking invitation to debate Harvard University’s championship team. The film is directed by two-time Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and stars Forest Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, Jurnee Smollett, Nate Parker and Denzel Whitaker.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, pretty obviously (No! I told you I don’t want no bootleg copy, Reds!), but, see, this is the kind of Denzel movie I can get behind. Please don’t do any more “Training Days” or “American Gangsters,” D!
And is dude’s name really Denzell Whitaker? How ironic is that?!

@Anonymous: I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. No more Denzel as the psycho bad guy, and yes, how ironic is the name Denzel Whitaker, that was the first thing I noticed when I read the cast (Denzel Washington, Forrest Whitaker, and Denzel Whitaker) – no relation to either.
@Yobachi: No I need to check it out.

I have not seen the movie but have heard so much about it that I will of course have to go out and see it! Miss Smollett has grown into a beautiful young lady, I hope that her career developes into something awesome. Even though Denzel Whitaker is no relation to either star with a name like that he must feel some awesome weight on his shoulders!
By the way nice site!
Blessings!

For the record, I could have been in the movie. They filmed it right near my work and also I had a chance to meet Denzel… but then I would’ve gotten arrested… because I couldn’t get tickets… so I would have been yelling from outside lol

I don’t really stan for Oprah (*ducks to miss chairs thrown at her head*), but I was able to watch this movie and it was great. The story (both the script and the actual story) was great, the acting was wonderful (save for a few parts here and there). Really good movie and inspiring, too. (Oh, and my cousin now officially has a crush on Nate Parker bka Henry Lowe)
